The League of Nations didn't disband until the United Nations was formed. It was disbanded and its assets were transfered to the UN in 1946.
What put a stake through the League of Nations' heart was the Italian invasion of Abyssinia in 1935. The League failed to do anything serious about it (minor santions against Italy) substantially because of secret French and British negotiations with Italy to allow Italy to control large sections of Abyssinia (the Hoare/Laval pact).

What really put the stake through the heart of the UN was Rwanda.
