My earlier supposition that the US wants to provoke a WMD attack begins to look more probable. Do you mean against our troops? Why would Saddam Hussein do that at this time? I think it would be foolish for him to do so.

Does anyone think the war will formally start while Bush is in the Azores? No. That would be crazy.
Which is exactly why we'd do it...

I would think attacking while Bush was in the Azores would come as a big surprise. Perhaps that is the planGreat minds...

Why would Saddam Hussein do that at this time? There are reports that Saddam already has lost control of the South.
Iraqi Generals already may have secretly agreed to change sides.
Saddam may decide he is in the end game even before the war begins.

I dont think the Air War is under way any more than it has been under way for 10 years now in the no fly zone. This is just maintenance. They used the B1 bombers because they want the pilots to stay sharp for the real thing.
The Southern No Fly Zone is a bombing range, and anyone with sufficiently limited mental facilities to move a scud or Anti-Aircraft weapon into this area is a target.

Iraqi Generals already may have secretly agreed to change sides. They'll change sides when they change sides, not when they secretly agree (maybe) to change sides. Right now, they must still be more afraid of Saddam Hussein than of the U.S. armed forces. This will change at some point, but I don't think it will be this week or this month.
If Saddam thinks his grip on the south is slipping, he will carry out more of his usual acts of intimidation, and everybody there will be well reminded that, at this time, they have more to fear from Saddam than from the U.S.

Best wishes to your brother - give him my thanks for being there (especially since he wasn't "ordered" to go).
and re-iterate your point to "keep his head and ass down."!

More significant is the fact that B-1's were involved - this is the first time they have been used in the Gulf region (including Desert Storm).I had a co-worker during the Afgahn war who said 16 B1s dropping JDAMs could do more damage than a thousand B29s or B52s dropping conventional bombs.
Hitting the target is more important than the size of the bomb.
