We had been lied to, and outsmarted by a pair of mutts. This was not humanity's finest hour.

LOL. Even 'dumb' dogs are pretty smart! I am constantly amazed at what my dog can do -- and his trainer would say that he is not the smartest dog in the world. I would say that he is plenty smart -- but not necessarily obedient.

Harsh training techniques can ruin these sensitive dogs...

I can see the sensitivity in the one that I train with. She's a really special dog. My Golden likes her too and would love to get a good sniff, but that's not allowed! LOL.

The late entertainer Steve Allen was asked to contribute a poem to a Long Island Animal Welfare Group that was raising money for a new shelter. He wrote this heart-breaking classic, one of the greatest poems about dogs I have ever read.

MISSING OUR DOGS

Old Men miss many dogs.
They only live a dozen years,if that,
And by the time you are sixty, there are several
The names of which evoke remembering smiles.
You see them in your mind, heads cocked and seated.
You see them by your bed, or in the rain,
Or sleeping by the fire by nights
And always dying.

You are young but they are old. They go,
The German shepherd and the poodle,
The bassett hound and mutt.
They are remembered like departed children
Though they gave vastly more than ever they took,
And finally you're seeing dogs that look like them.
They pass you in the street but never turn
Although it seems they should, their faces so familiar. Old men miss many dogs.

I have a dog dilemna I could use some help on. Our beloved family dog, a lab mix named Missy, is old and has very bad arthritis. At some point over the next few months we are going to have to have her euthanized. The problem is she is terrified of the veterinary hospital. I don't want her last few moments of life to be spent in fear.

I would like to take her outdoors somewhere, to a park or the desert, and have her given the injection there. Has anyone heard of this being done? Does anyone know of a vet in the Phoenix area who will do this? Also, what kind of drug should we specify so that her demise will be peaceful? I've heard that some drugs that are used cause convulsions.

I know this probably sounds like a strange request, but she has been a very good dog. The time is near, and I want to do right by her.

Thanks,
Jeff

I had a vet come to our house. I'm sure if you ask around there are vets in Phoenix that will do it. I have been with dogs when euthanized and have never seen convulsions.

Don't forget Sgt. Stubby, the Connecticut Pit Bull who saved countless lives in WWI, was the first dog to attain rank in the Army, and met two Presidents.

When my mood becomes reflective and I am taken to remembering days gone by, whether it is Saturday mornings on my bicycle or summer afternoons on my swingset, there is one face that is always there with me: my dog.
