Phil Sheridan, upon being asked for a sitrep by Grant: "I am ready to strike out tomorrow and go to smashing things!"

So does a purse snatcher.

Contrast that with the Lincoln government, which went for much more than a simple purse snatcher, or highwayman as one famous abolitionist put it:

Every government must compel the payment of taxes if it wants to survive.

You're just upset because President Lincoln trumped the traitors at every turn. Of course, they were so maladroit, that is not much of a feat.

Every government must compel the payment of taxes if it wants to survive.

But compulsion of taxes need not be an act of outright robbery, nor need it be conducted on the false pretenses so popular in today's state.

If you are upset with today's government, complain about today's government. What happens today has nothing to do with the ACW beyond the fact that it was proven that a giant nest of traitors could not overthrow the lawful government.

The taxes imposed by Lincoln were -so- oppressive -- they were outright robbery to -such- a degree --that he was re-elected by a wide margin and carried every state in the Electoral College but one.

Happily. And I'll also complain about two men who took actions that helped create today's government - your two favorite idols FDR and The Lincoln.

Yeah, cause all those states were slated to be on the RECIEVING end of his tax policy's redistributionary effects. The other part of the nation didn't get to vote in that one because Lincoln was at war with them trying to ensure he'd have something to redistribute.
