Just a real quick note but I don't think this is a real calibre. 45-70 Government is the closest thing that comes to mind and I'd hate to see you make an elementary error in what is otherwise fantastic writing.

Maynard 44-70 ... old rifle. Really too old for Orka107 to have gotten from her father, and it was not a Winchester (my bad).
In the transcript, I changed it to a Winchester 44-40, Model 1892 about ten days ago.
