Remember, it was the Russians who proposed eradicating smallpox in the 1950s. Twenty years later, it was done. The UN pressured Reagan to destroy CDC stocks. He told them to pack sand. Ten years after that... (I guess Biopreparat was a Reagan contrivance as well. Gee, keep stocks of lethal microbes in case the "well meaning" Soviets "accidentally" had a release of said microbes, or destroy them, and have no way to generate a cure. Would there be any smallpox antiserum today if Reagan kowtowed to the Soviets?

Think of where we might be had Carter won a second term.

Hmmm, probably still in the midst of a cold war with half of Europe still behind the Iron Curtain, home mortgage interest at a 25% rate, and the U.S. population fed on rations of peanuts and Billy Beer. IMHO, of course! ;-) Isn't everyone that Carter cut deals with dead?

Frankly, it's shocking.

This is such a monstrous act of betrayal, by a country reunited ONLY because of the generosity of American taxpayers, the principal targets of Soviet weapons for forty years.

Apparently the Germans first tried to use biological agents in America in 1915: (According to a top-secret 1943 report written by George W. Merck, pharmaceutical magnate and biological-warfare adviser to President Roosevelt, the U.S. possessed "incontrovertible evidence" that "as early as 1915" German agents in New York City's harbor "inoculated horses and cattle with disease-producing bacteria." )

Well, I think we should repay them for their efforts and help our ally Turkey at the same time. We could offer all the criminals, elderly and sick in Turkey enough money to relocate to Germany and France. Give them enough to make sure they have enough to get by until they can qualify for the social programs. :o)

Here are a couple of paragraphs from this article: In February 10, 2003, the government of Germany began building a new, anti-American Berlin-Moscow-Paris Axis. As one of the former Soviet bloc experts on German matters (and chief of a bloc intelligence station in West Germany), I had been waiting for something like that to happen ever since October 1998, when Joschka Fischer became Germany's foreign minister.

Fischer is an indirect product of the old anti-American intelligence community to which I once belonged. In 1975 Libya's dictator, Colonel Muammar Qaddafi, informed Romania's tyrant, Nicolae Ceausescu — through me — that he was preparing a terrorist attack against the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and asked my boss to provide him with blueprints of OPEC's temporary headquarters in Vienna. Ceausescu agreed, and the Romanian espionage service (the DIE) complied. The December 1975 takeover of OPEC's headquarters in Vienna resulted in the seizure of 60 OPEC officials and staff members as hostages. The kidnapping was organized by Qaddafi and the infamous Ilich Ramírez Sánchez — "Carlos" or "the Jackal."

This whole thing stirs up some very ugly memories of the past connections of Germany with biological agents and poisonous gas via one of its oldest companies, I.G. FARBEN and its production of the gas, Zyklon B, used to kill the innocent Jews in WWII:(link to Weisenthal Center)
