Canadian timber quotas are a gigantic issue between our two nations. Lumber prices have been all over the place as a result. I don't follow that market closely, but lumber trade is a political football right now.

"...While this ad was CERTAINLY a good start, our German friends need to do a lot more at this crucial time in history, IMO....Perhaps a ceremony could be instituted for a yearly tribute of hand picked young German virgins--of both sexes, of course; we are not puritans anymore--to be offered up to interested American Politicians?
As the procession of virgin Germans passes in front of the President, German industrialists and government officials would stand in a phalanx behind the Leader of the Free World scourging themselves with riding whips and whistling the love song from Tristan and Isolde.
After the ceremony, hand picked citizens from among the general German population would be invited to the White House to kiss the President's butt. This would, of course, take place out of sight of cameras for the sake of dignity....

My friends are concerned about US/German relations, even if some of them oppose the war, too. But what Schröder did is not excused.
I´m pretty sure that these posts calling for an end of US-German friendship are exaggerated and come mostly from those who always hated my country. Boycott whatever you want, but talking of "true allies" is unfair. Keep in mind that the peoples in whole Europe oppose in majority the war and the difference is just who presides the government.
Why is the Spanish who participates at demonstrations better than those in Germany who support the US pressure on Iraq?

Re your post #43 - Well, that is not quite what I had in mind. Perhaps Germany could agree to live up to its obligations in NATO for example, and agree to help defend Turkey. Or, would Germany prefer that the rest of the world turn a deaf ear to Germany the next time Germany needs such help? I guess so.

Re your post #44 - I did not see Germany, at the UN, express any concern over Saddam's lies as Spain's leader did.

The problem is the socialists among the Germans, which socialists, are among the "bund" of world-wide socialists such as Hillary Clinton and James Carville.
The difficulties with some of our allies is not that they are French, or German, or Belgian.
The problem is that among them, and now in charge of affairs of state, are the socialists who are no different than the so-called "anti-war" protestors at U. of C. Berkeley and hundreds of other bastions of oppression around the globe.
The no. 1 supporters of terrorism around the world, are not fanatical Islamics; rather, the no. 1 supporters of terrorism around the world, are socialists --- it is especially they, for example, who support Arafat, Inc.
The problem is that the current crop of world-wide socialistas have come to a new red dawn in their minds, that the days of "the long march" are finally over, and a new push is demanded of them, upon the people who would otherwise be free, meaning you and me.
99.999999999...% of the support for fasicst Islamicism comes from socialists; there is not much difference between them, other than the uniform; because both do not believe at all in a loving Allah; instead, they only believe in other peoples' duties to them.
Again, that is an understatement of their ill will toward freedom-loving people who also happen to believe in a loving God and a loving Allah.
We are at war against nationalizing fascist socialism, regardless of their uniform, regardless of their language, regardless of their "nation [actual or imaginary] of origin."
We should direct our efforts accordingly.

Thanks for another silly post, Askel. You are morphing into Maureen Dowd, but I bet Mo doesn't recycle old yarns about coon cats, ice cream bowls and domestic accidents. You tried that one last year.It was more amusing than the Wagner allusion:-)

"So let me get this straight! A country that boasts freedom should financially cripple another country for practicing what we preach because their view differs from ours! WOW this really is America!
I'm all for taking out Saddam, but at what cost? Threats and bribery? Is this what it's come down to? Are we no better than those we claim to abhor? Isn't threatening someone to get what you want extortion, and isn't extortion an act of terrorism?"
Freedom to speak means we can voice our oppinions. Freedom to purchase what we want is our right too. Whether Germany supports us or not, we'll go it alone. But if I want to spend my money out of loyalty to the US, that's my business. Business is business.
If someone kicks me, after I bought a item from them, I get to choose if I want to buy another item from them. If they go bankrupt, perhaps it's because they didn't make wise decisions..... I personally don't cause their problems. Their choices do.
