This proves once again where the Catholic Church is heading per its' opposition to a college that will teach truth. ... The Catholic Church continues to follow the path of satan- pro abortion, pro homosexuality, etc.. This comment is simply bizarre. Richard McBrien is not "the Catholic Church"; he's a notorious dissident from Catholic truth. And the people you call "those bold Catholics" are utterly loyal to the Church, and in no confusion about exactly where McBrien stands.
And calling the Church "pro abortion" and "pro homosexuality" is bizarre also. Evidently you think that rebels from Catholicism who've wormed their way into positions of power are "the Catholic Church" and faithful Catholics fighting the reaction to the Quislings in their midst are ... what, exactly?
Trust me, Tom Monaghan and Fr. Fessio have friends in high places in Rome. Lots of them. Far more than McBrien has, which has not a little to do with his jealous reaction to them.

As a student at Notre Dame, this was the first thing that came to my mind. Do you know how much money ND has sitting in their bank account right now? Approximately 3 million dollars. Do you know how much tuition is? Approximately 36,000 dollars and rising every year. Why don't they hand that to some of the inner city schools instead of uprooting and planting flowers all over the entire campus for every single home football game?
What's interesting though is Father McBrien's complete contradiction against himself. He is a theology professor. Did he not also feel that his call was to educate young people while strengthening their Catholic faith in the process? No matter how skewed his view of the faith is, his goals are exactly the same as Monaghan's.

"Yeah, what an idiot. Jesus never talked about feeding the poor or helping the elderly or anything like that. He wants us to have conservative schools where abortionists and liberals are stoned."
I find it interesting that no one mentions that money WAS used to build Notre Dame. Should that money have gone to feed the poor, et al instead as well?
No reason BOTH can't be done. Do as you are called. If God is calling you to minister to the hungry, do so. If He is calling you to build a conservative university, do so.
And by the way, the comment about 'stoning' was completely uncalled for and over the top.
Your apology is accepted.

Far more than McBrien has, which has not a little to do with his jealous reaction to them. LOL! That's exactly what's happening. From the Angelic Doctor:
"Envy according to the aspect of its object is contrary to charity, whence the soul derives its spiritual life... Charity rejoices in our neighbor's good, while envy grieves over it."
Let's see, jealousy or envy, I always get them confused. No wait! Maybe it's pride! Yea, that's the ticket. Think he has any anger with it?
I think we're on on case study of the 7 deadly sins being played out here...

May I steal borrow it on occasion? Only if you return it and put it back exactly where you got it from! ;-)

It was obviously a short study. You make it sound as if the Jesuits themselves were raping the countryside. If by stay out of local politics you mean not do anything to help poor banana farmers get better wages, yeah, I guess they can't seem to stay out of local politics. If the government is staying out the social justice areas, as I believe they should, I think religion fills the gap quite well. And the Jesuits are the pope's right hand men. The head of the Jesuits is known as the Black Pope. So wait, you're trusting the word of a dictator? Would you believe Saddam Hussein if he said the Kurds deserved to be gassed because they were talking about overthrowing him?
Communist's, pure and simple? That is possibly the most offensive thing I've ever heard said. Chuckles, perhaps you should do a longer study. It sounds like you've been reading a Jack Chick tract my friend.

Are you saying people who disagree with the status quo should be shot? That sounds interesting. I'm so glad we have a true Catholic scholar to help us understand these things. Excelsior to you, chuckles.

So, the Jesuits do *not* practice, believe in, etc liberation theology?
To: Siobhan
For example, when Pope John Paul II asked Catholic universities to become more Catholic, McBrien responded in the Chronicle of Higher Education: "Bishops should be welcome on a Catholic university campus. Give them tickets to ball games. Let them say Mass, bring them to graduation. Let them sit on the stage. But there should be nothing beyond that." This is the person that saying that Tom Monaghan is too conservative.
I agree send him to Somalia.

The Jesuit priests of the world believe lots of stuff, just like regular Catholics, so to say the entirety of the Jesuits follows one philosophy is a grave error in logic. It is the largest order of priests in the church. I was taught multiple different theologies at the Jesuit high school I attended, since there are multiple theologies that are dealt with by the Catholic church. I was also taught the Catholic church's official teachings on most things, in a separate class called "Faith and Sacraments." These thing were also dealt with last in "Theology", being as they are most important. The Jesuits are mainly a missionary organization, but they do many other things. And some do believe in working for social justice actively, through such radical theologies as liberation theology. There are also non-Jesuits who believe in this theology.
Socrates is dead. All cats die. Socrates was a cat.

A good rule of thumb when encountering a Jesuit is to ask "Are you a good Jesuit, or a bad Jesuit?"
To: narses
But it's Monaghan's rigorously conservative vision for the school a vision that has no room for coed dorms or gay-support groups that worries many Catholic educators. Why do Catholic educators want coed dorms???????

Anyone heard any updates on how this project is going?
