Me and my brother just split a brick of that .22 Aquila Sub-sonic Sniper ammo and a brick of Aquila .22 High Velocity copper coated ammo.
Haven't had the chance to go to the range yet due to the lousy weather. Have you shot that Sniper round? How's it shoot?

FN-FAL. I love the heavier caliber and reach ... and gladly trade off for the extra weight.
Very maintainable.
As regards the main topic of the thread ... I agree, and wrote about it some time ago.

I agree, and wrote about this same topic some time ago, during the belt-way sniper incident.

Actually I have a chance to buy a near new Springfield M1A "loaded" (some National Match upgrades from the factory) from a friend.
I am torn. The AR is lighter, .308 is much more effective.
Thanks for the reply, Jeff.

If I were in your shoes right now, just looking, I'd get the M1A loaded ... just because I like the effectiveness of .308.
But, you're not going to go wrong in either case.

"States are well within their rights to completely ban firearms if they so choose ala Kalifornistan." Only if you believe that a state can pass laws that are repugnant, not in pursuance to, and superior to the supreme law of the land, the U.S. Consitution, which contains and especially references the Bill of Rights.
I believe that Article VI, para 2, shows that the Bill of Rights is unquestionably superior to the constitution of any state where a conflict exists or the states would not have ratified those amendments. I further believe that the Bill of Rights is evidence enough that the people retained the right to severely limit government's involvement in the personal lives of the people, in spite of the fact that the people later allowed itself to be mis-represented and un-represented in Congress with Amendment 17 (which precipitated the slow march into a democracy and the degradation of our Republic).
Nevertheless, I still live in a Republic, and will not allow fifty-one percent, or even 99.99 percent of of un-informed people to make decisions on my behalf which effect ANY of my unalienable rights -- both enumerated and non-enumerated.

"Standard" would probably refer to an A2 clone. That has a non-removable carry handle. The removable handle/flat tops are sometimes called A3s.
I've got a flat top Bushmaster with the fixed front sight post and an A2 style removable carry handle. It's a great rifle. Had I bought the rifle knowing what I know now, I would probably went with a straight flat top and used a trijicon reflex sight.
I did have a problem with "double feeds" in the first 50 rounds, however I think this was more due to Bushmaster's very tightly sprung 10 round magazine. Since break-in the rifle has been flawless.
When you buy one, check out Bushmasters FAQ on break in. It is opposite from the standard non-chrome barrel break in (if you buy into that in the first place).

Oddly enough, you'll notice my stance is aligned with yours.
Our Courts, and unfortunately some Freepers, are not. My post was only to reiterate their position, not make it my own.

One will easily obtain the other, the difference being, as you point out, the mindset. A .22LR to the cranio-ocular cavity is better than a .50BMG that misses.

Since we're talking guns, does anyone have suggestions for building a really lightweight AR clone? Now that Professional Ordnance and it's flyweight AR lookalike are history, I'd like to build something similar but which uses mil-spec bolt, carrier, etc. Any decent carbon-fiber receivers out there? How about lightweight barrels? With enough suggestions, perhaps we should cook up a "Bang_List Special". :-)

Didn't mean to sound preachy, but I bristle when I hear The Government frame our right to bear arms as something it graciously has conferred on its subjects, albeit in a very limited way....

I would suggest that you check out www.thehighroad.com (that's the new "thefiringline), fullauto.com, and ar-15.com.
They all have various "project gun" threads runnig which will answer all of your questions and give you many ways to go.

Some call it the "ratchet effect." It only works one way: tighter, like handcuffs.
It continues until you are kneeling by the edge of a mass grave with a muzzle pressd to your neck, or there is a revolution.
Look at the past.
Look at the future.
Look at the faces.
NEVER AGAIN!!!
"By calling attention to 'a well regulated militia', the 'security' of the nation, and the right of each citizen 'to keep and bear arms', our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason, I believe the Second Amendment will always be important." ~
John F. Kennedy, April 1960
"There is no doubt in my mind that millions of lives could have been saved if the people had not been 'brainwashed' about gun ownership and they had been well armed. Hitler's thugs and goons were not very brave when confronted by a gun. Gun haters always want to forget the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, which is a perfect example of how a ragtag, half starved group of Jews took up 10 handguns and made asses out of the Nazi's." ~
Theodore Haas, former prisoner of the infamous Dachau prisoner concentration camp.
