Sitting on the floor in my bedroom talking to a friend, who was working with me on a project, to get a new playground in our town up and running. Hung up and my beloved, late Dad, who always dreamed of being in the space program, (he was an aeronautical engineer)called. He was speechless. where were you today ? - my God how sad - so many millions of miles traveled and lost so close to home

In graduate class (waiting for it to start) in Southeast Asian history when someone came in and said the shuttle had exploded...left class immediately and made it home to TV in record time. Cried and cried and cried...

In the Navsea building at the Sub Base @ Point Loma San Diego Ca. Just left my desk and was on my way down to the piers to check on a problem on one of the boats. As I went down the stairs I could hear soemone's radio turned up loud, and the secretary crying.......

Noticed you worked at GD at the time of the Challenger explosion. I, too, worked at General Dynamics, at their headquarters building in St. Louis at the time - -accounting department - - I remember thinking....can they survive if they hit the water? - - I had this stupid, optimistic feeling that maybe....just maybe....they survived....... :-(

Boy, I remember it well. I just left Aviation for a 5 year stint with the railroad before going back into aviation.
Seems like just yesterday...

I was on the Cape. My aunt worked for a NASA contractor and got a launch pass for me. My launch pass is in an album of photographs I took of the launch and explosion.

I was walking into the cafeteria at work in Syracuse when I heard about it. Today I heard about the Columbia right here on FR. I woke up at 9 today. First morning ritual is check the puter, first E-mail, 2nd my E-bay listings, 3rd Free Republic, then its on to take care of the animals. Suffice today the animals had to wait a little longer to be taken care of :(
I saw the headlines at the right, said Columbia missing, clicked on it and it had been removed. I felt relieved for a second as I thought it was a prank post, but it was being pulled due to a concurrent post.

You might want to digitize the video. VHS tape degrades over time, even without being viewed on a VCR.

I was at Dellwood lanes bowling with my high school bowling class--I watched the explosion on the TV set in front of the snack bar. The bus ride back to school was eerily quiet-- a busload of teenagers was totally silent. I've forgotten most of everything from around that time, but I'll never forget that day.
