The reason for 17. ...Rae8 was it was the only way to protect the e pawn. Black cannot lose that pawn because it is blocking white's queen from attacking the castled position. It also has the added bonus of getting rid of the dangerous knight on d6. So, black was losing a piece, and the e pawn was more important than a rook for a knight.

I went back and replayed the game. I now see the logic of that move. Still, Deep Junior's best available move was problematic. This Kasparov guy seems to be pretty good :^)
