Airbase protection and support crews; logistics (note the ports); strategic reserve.
To: a_Turk
Reserves and supply/logistics perhaps? Also for air operations, they would base out of country?
a guess, some of the military folks here more expert than I on such a question.
BTW, if you really are a Turk wlecome to Free Republic ... hope to see more Freepers in that part of the world! :-)

No, let me rephrase: Why move 80000 soldiers to Turkey and only move 60000 of those into Irak?

Not everybody who was in Saudi Arabia went into Kuwait and Iraq back in 1991.
A lot of rear area functions would still need to be performed in Turkey after the war got started--like moving food, ammo and fuel from the port of entry to the front lines, or combat sorties out of Incirlik AFB.

Medical, intelligence, logistics, and supply troops must all stay behind the front lines to keep the thing going.
This is excellent news. It will even be better if you tell me that one of the bases is at Batman, Turkey. That was one of the sites we were looking at, and you don't have a Godzilla, Turkey.

A Northern front? To make sure the Kurds don't come gushing into Turkey from Iraq when the war starts?
To: LdSentinal
We've already made accommodations for 50,000 families south of the border. That's tent cities, not ditches, BTW..

Our guys feel they have to match you.. I doubt pride or fear is at play. More like protect the Turkoman areas/goodies and make sure the Kurds don't declare independence.

Uhmmm...you live in the States, though, right? (according to your profile)
If you do I think you need to clarify that for a few of our fellow FReepers.
