I was rereading this and I agree. Especially your point that it's not a timid act to call law enforcement over if something's not going well -- they're trained to handle this and they've never let us down. In fact, in the District of Columbia, it is the LAW that you can't take matters into your own hands in "self-defense" if you have a viable option of retreating. It's called the "duty to retreat." So it would actually even be *unlawful* to, say, punch someone back who punched you, if you had the option of stepping back and calling the cops. The law in this jurisdiction requires the forebearance and wisdom of Job!

So follow the rules and keep the police insight and informed.
