The irony is the opposite is true. Most of the 3rd world today is impoverished because they suffer under the evils of socialism. Those countries that adopt free markets and free trade - like hong kong, taiwan, japan in 1960s, etc. - become 'economic miracles' and are no longer 3rd world countries.
