How many times have you read about the stepfather or boyfriend hurting a child? Read any paper and you'll see it over and over again.

And yes, some natural fathers hurt their children, or let their wives hurt them, but it's the exception, not the rule. It's the boyfriend monster, or stepdaddy crap that's sick twisted.

Marriage is the best thing that can happen to protect a child -- statistically speaking.

Liberals love broken families for the same reason corrupt priest love them. Children from broken families are easy prey. Sick creeps.

What good would that do? I never cease to be amazed at "conservatives'" belief in the supernatural powers of a government-issued marriage license.

Absolutely. Let's hope and pray they grow to be strong, loving adults who hopefully can tuck this horror away forever.

The 'mother' gave the children to her 'cousin' because she was about to go to jail. When she got out of jail she supposedly couldn't find her children.

The 'cousin' had five children of her own, but kept these babies locked in the basement.

There's a whole lot of spin going on here.......but why not pay more attention yourself before you become an apologist for the indefensible sin.

You missed my point. The lowlifes who go around impregnating numerous women and making no attempt to live with or otherwise support the children, are hardly going to be reformed by some political scheme to induce them (or financially bribe them, as some Republicans were suggesting last year) to obtain a marriage license. The reason that marriage is statistically associated with better outcomes for children, is because of the pre-existing values and intentions of the people who choose, on their own initiative) to make the commitment of marriage.

The government's licensing and recognition of marriages has never been shown to have any effect on the outcome (has it had any effect on the "marriages" of people like Michael Jackson and J-Lo?). What I object to is the frequent claim that if only these people would get "married", they'd have more stable families, and the children would be raised in a more civilized environment. It just has no basis in reality, and distracts attention from seeking reality-based remedies for the devastating social pathologies among this sort of people. These people are presently incapable of and wholly disinterested in forming the type of marriages that generate the positive statistics. And if remedies could be found to render them capable and desirous of forming such relationships, whether the government isued them licenses or not, would make little or no difference in the outcome of the families

As the system is set up now, the state encourages young women to be single parents. You object to pushing marriage, and I object to pushing single parenting.

How does the state create this perverse incentive? When a young women gets pregnant often times the young man wants to be with her. But having a child is an expense many poor young people can't afford. For years (and I hope it's changed) the woman could get Medicaid to pay the bills if she was NOT married. After the baby was born, and the reality of raising a child came into play, the uncommitted father would walk. In a marriage, that easy and destructive choice could be stalled. For years, the state worked to create the nightmare. Marriage is not perfect for raising children, but it's the best system we've seen so far. If you know of one better, please share it.
