I just finished "The Haj" by Leon Uris. Great historical novel that gives great insight into this culture. Covers the period between the World Wars, the formation of Israel, and through the '58 war and shortly thereafter, from the Islamic perspective. Recommended to all FReepers.

This article reinforces the lessons about ME Islamic culture illustrated in that book.
