Well, I'm not Chinese but their position on abortion seems pretty straightforward to me. Boys have a higher value placed on them than girls. That coupled with the one child rule, seems enivitable to me that vastly more girls would be aborted. Abortion and selective abortion are logical and rational within their framework. There really is no big change here. Before abortion was widely available and before the one child policy was enacted more girls were victims of infanticide, nutritional neglect, medical care neglect etc. (Same is true in parts of India). It's all about valuation.

In our country, all babies are devalued when some are routinely seen as a net burden or drain on society. Women and children make up the bulk of those in poverty, which is very telling. There are strong cultural forces in play to coerce abortion instead of more enlightened approaches such as holding both parents equally accountable for the children they create and creating equal opportunity for all people regardless of their procreative status.

Also, we could if we "chose" to change our overall outlook about children in general to one which views all children as a net potential asset to society rather than as a net negative. But we don't choose to do that; we segretate them (prior to birth even) and deem them a burden or a drain or likely drain on society, or potential criminals, a burden on the environment etc. (the justificatons are endless) and we write them off.

This is how we "choose" (speaking of choice) to view some children. We view some of them as "wanted" and desirable and some of them as "unwanted" and not desirable. Under our framework, different than the Chinese only by degree, it's not hard for many people to justify abortion for the greater good.

And they do. But not nearly often enough for pro-Choice. The abortion rate has been falling steadily, but even at its zenith 25% of pregnancies ended in abortion. That means 75% of all pregnancies were NOT aborted. This fact irks a lot of people. I've heard countless pro-"choice" people pontificate about who should and should not be procreating and droning on about all the ill effects due society if women refuse to abort (instead of focussing on fixing the social framework they blame the woman and the child). There are powerful voices in our society coercing abortion by the "greater social good" rhetoric. Of course, this is contradictory to "choice", but hypocrisy never seems to burden some people.

Of course, many pro-Life people are equally contraditory, claiming to value life and then equally demonizing those who abort and those who don't (with the same child-as burden not asset to society mentality as described above).

In short, we (society) can't have it both ways. We either have to value all life or not. If we don't value human life equally, then the pro-abortion side has a rational point.

How many converts have you made by being soft, sensitive, and understanding?

We either have to value all life or not. If we don't value human life equally, then the pro-abortion side has a rational point. I would echo the 'human life equally, as close as a selfish society can get to that idea, but I would take issue with 'rational point'. There is nothing rational about sanctioning the services of serial killers when the laws pursue such evil ones in every other venue except the womb. There can never be a 'rational point' to such a duplicity, such paradox, regardless of plea.

Rational is not the same as moral.

Right you are. Perhaps I'm thinking of 'logical', as in rational syllogistic flow. In that sense, duplicitous reasoning is irrational.

"How many converts have you made by being soft, sensitive, and understanding?"

BWAHAHAHAHA...plenty, and they are STILL my friends and they now believe that Roe v. Wade is unconstitutional and must be overturned or overlegislated. All I'm saying, my FRiend, is that demonizing the woman is short-sighted, IMHO. Sure, you can win the argument, but you end up losing your intended convert. Think about it...if you killed an unborn child that was growing inside of you and were the least bit concerned with the value of life, you'd haveta be self-loathing to some degree, wouldn't you?! I mean, if you believe in an AfterLife, and you just KILLED the most innocent of God's creatures, you'd probably wonder what Hell was going to be like. My point is that there has to be some strong emotions pent up inside of women who've had abortions and your noble efforts--well said, btw--tend to demonize the female when any potential converts probably already feel pretty bad about themselves BEFORE you started making them feel worse. I AGREE 100% that Fathers DESERVE Some Say on what happens to their progeny...but making this a Man vs. WOman debate creates a schism which I believe to be inconducive to changing the Hearts and the Minds of our fellow Americans.

FReegards, my FRiend, and good thread...MUD
