"What were/are pit bulls bred to do?" Fight.
What were Americans bred to do?
Fight.
Just as we are wimping out as a people, the pit has been tamed to meet with our reduced need for violence.

I have a six month old jack russell in the household among four other assorted adult 5 pluss year old breeds that also live here.It takes time but I have to teach the pup what he can and can not do.It is not the breed that causes reaction,it is what the owner percieves the breed will do that causes bad dogs.I can take any pup of any breed and make it into a killer or a pet.

I disagree, if you have failed to raise your animals with you in control and you have to resort to muzzles and such, you really should examine whether you are cut out to own a dog.
The secondary fact that they drag her down the road, confirms my first point.
She obviously has them as some sort of status symbol and she should stick with a Chihuahua, or gerbil.

Can you beat any breed on the head with a ball peen hammer in an attempt to make it release it's victim and fail?
I saw someone do just that in a video of a pit bull attacking a woman. There is more to this than just how they are raised.
They are a violent breed and their owners should be very carefull to protect society from their pets.

Bull. They are still being bred to fight. Far more than they are being bred to be pets. They are pre-disposed to be aggressive.
The promoters of any other breed in the world will tell you to really look into the design purpose of a breed before you choose it as a pet. Except pit bull people. They say it doesn't matter... its all in the upbringing.

That bothers me also.. People who have things they cannot control.
I watched an out take from some stupid game show once where a guy brought a bear on stage. He obviously thought he was tough, dressed in his karate uniform, but he didn't have allot of luck pulling that bear off the woman it attacked a few seconds later.
That thing tossed him around like a rag doll.
If you can't control it, you have no business turning it loose on the rest of us. At least this woman knew enough to realize this, I applaud her effort.
I think it's great that she has the presense of mind to know her posessions could potentially hurt someone and takes action to prevent it.
(Now she just needs to hire a dog trainer.. )

Of course you can make any dog mean. That isn't the point. The point is, you have to take corrective action to prevent a pit from being aggressive. Like training a retriever NOT to fetch.

My dog is not bred to fight and I don't really concern myself with other peoples dogs, unless they are trespassing on my property.
Believe what you want, I really don't give a shit.

Pit Bulls can be violent,no doubt. So can some breeds of cattle, more than others.point being, regardless of the breed,I can make any dog a killer.Just as there is deranged humans you can also have deranged animals.Animals can suffer from mental illness also.
To: dtel
Very nice mouth. We really try to not resort to that on this forum.

There is a special place in Hell for abusers of animals.

Bite your tongue!!! I can't
stand those PETA people, either.
I've been doing dog rescue for almost 30 years, and the things people will do to animals will make you sick.

Yeah we do, but dealing with mindless ninnies does test one's patience at times.
What do you propose we do, kill 'em all?
Why are you so scared of them?

I can take any pup of any breed and make it into a killer or a pet. I'd give you $100 if you could make a bichon frise into a killer.
I can't fortify mine so that they won't run from a 6 pound cat.

What do you propose we do, kill 'em all? More and more cities are banning ownership of pits. If they hurt or kill a person or another animal, you bet. Kill them.
Why are you so scared of them?
For the same reason we're afraid of bears. They can be very gentle, then suddenly lash out.
As you know, I think many owners have them as proof of their manhood.
I'm a dog lover, but I'm not crazy enough to have a pit.
Or a Jack Russell. Or one of those lunatic dalmatians, either.

Short chain it to a tree and go out and kick it daily. Be sure to with hold any love or affection. Starve for special effect.
Presto, one mean ass dog, I don't care what breed.

I have tried you patience by saying something as obvious as "pit bulls were designed and bred to fight"? Does confronting reality always make you swear?
I don't lay awake scared of pit bulls. I do wish good people didn't get sucked into the farce that they are just like any other dog. If only the dog-fighting types had them, perhaps we would at least know what we are dealing with when we see one.
The good people that are promoters of the breed, who are trying to change the dog's image are peeing on a forest fire, and telling themselves lies when they think they are affecting the gene pool. They are a drop in the bucket. The vast majority of these dogs are still very much bred for their their intended purpose, and not the best choice when looking for a pet. There are better breeds for any legitimate purpose.
To: HairOfTheDog
There are better breeds for any legitimate purpose. Hell, if a man's got to have a big dog, a German Shepherd is a good choice.
But, why not a Lab, or a Golden?
I'm not a big dog guy, but I love my neighbor's Lab. What a gem of a dog!
