FYI et al,
Regarding the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, there is another side of the story that was published in Chronicles, February 1995, by Ralph Walker, titled, "The Eternal Regiment, The Continuing Saga of the 442nd."
"Not all Japanese-American leaders have been forthright in their representation of the internment issue, which as stated above, is often viewed in light of the hallowed 442nd. Seldom discussed are the more than 15,000 German- and Italian - Americans who also were relocated and interned during the war. The politcally correct argument is that the Euro-Americans were located and intered because they were a potential threat: The Japanese-Americans were relocated and intered because of 'racism.' In fact, when the government wanted to close the relocation centers in December 1944 - long before the war's end - Japanese-American leaders both in and out of the relocation centers lobbied Washington not to close them. Among those many reasons: the evacuees' lands had been leased for the duration of the war; some of the Japanese nationals were still not convinced that Japan would lose the war; and as Lillian Baker reported in her 1991 book, "The japanning of America: Redress & Reparations Demands by Japanese-Americans ('japanning' referring to the process of blackening fabric or metal; in this case, the varnishing of truth and the blackening of America's honor), some of the Japanese 'frankly never had it so good, being given three meals a day, a bed, medical attention, and no requirement to work for any of this and [some of them] actually wept when the relocation centers were closed. This meant these men were going from on-labor back to stoop labor."
"Remember, all that the evacuees were required to do to be released from the relocation centers--and from the dances, dinners, concerts, parties, schools, and graduation ceremonies that the centers provided the children and their families at taxpayers' expense, which Japanese-American lobbyists in the 1980's described as 'pain and hardship' - was to pledge allegiance to the United states and to resettle in one of the 44 available states not designated a military zone."
There was more information on the 442nd Japanese-American regiment, but the article is too long to transcribe, but we must also remember that there were Japanese-Americans who were sympathetic to their mother country. Also, it must be remembered that these were interment and holding camps, not concentration camps as the liberal media would have us believe. Has anyone ever heard of one Japanese-American in the interment camps ever having been tortured or murdered? Would that our POWs in Germany and Japan in WWII, in Korea and Vietnam, have had half the treatment given to Japanese-Americans in these camps, they wouldn't have perished or come back as skeletons.

INS spokesman Arcaute said those arrested had violated immigration laws, overstayed their visas, or were wanted for crimes. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

My apologies for the repeat.

Yes, they are criminals. This reminds Me of the sheriff in Arizona who erected a tent city for the new county lockup. while touring the facilities one day a prisoner walked up to complain to Him regarding the conditions . He said (and I kid you not!) "these conditions are horrible, you treat us like we were criminals or something". The sheriff just smiled and walked away. Some people just have an aversion to the truth.

"What's next? Concentration camps?" My, what an interesting idea!
"What happened to liberty and justice?."
A bunch of is-slime-ick terrorists assaulted it. Remember?

"Can the university hire her?", you ask.
Would this be a usual university, as in "left-wing wacko"? Well, then, OF COURSE they can (and probably will) hire noncitizens, all the more so if they are enemies of the USA.
Where have you been?

You don't think any Arab Christians have been arrested? If that was an out, how many would suddenly "find Jesus"?
Even Horrywood found Jesus the day after 9/11.
That didn't last long.
Once Bush made them feel safe again, they went back to trying to bite his throat!
Once a terrorist, always a terrorist I guess.

I doubt if many of those arrested were Christians. Was Lebanon included on the list of countries? (I doubt it. Seems to me most Lebanese I've seen in this country assimilated long ago and are doing fine.)
If you don't mind my asking, where else in the arab world are there large concentrations of Christians who are ethnically semitic?
It seems to me that most of the unassimilated people (in the U.S.), from the listed countries, are moslems. Incidentally, I am thinking there may also be some Israelis in the U.S. who are also in violation of INS rules. I doubt Israel is on that list, though, since as far as I know, there have been no Israelis caught scheming to destroy us, or seen flying planes into buildings, in the U.S. (Except those guys in NJ who were videotaping and celebrating, and except if you buy into the story believed in the middle east--that it was the Mossad that destroyed the WTC. Do you find that story reasonable?)
So I think this group you are worried about, arab Christians who have been arrested in California for INS violations, is either very small, or nonexistent.
And last I heard, Christians were supposed to follow all laws that didn't conflict with their religion. INS regs don't conflict with Christianity.

Wait a minute! Wait just a cotton-pickin' minute!!
IRANIANS??
Okay, I need people to see if I'm right about this: I thought the largest wave of Iranian immigrants (within our lifetimes--they were called Persians before that, weren't they?) was in THE SEVENTIES. Seems to me that on every college campus, American women were unpleasantly surprised to find Iranian men treating them like livestock--the Iranian men apparently thinking they were still in their own rectum of a country. American college men just seemed amused by it all. Ironically, those Iranian immigrants, I think, were mostly from families who felt it necessary to flee when the Shah left.
So...THE SEVENTIES?? Those people have been here since THE SEVENTIES--or even the eighties--and they are still not citizens, and not even permanent residents??????
Hello?? They don't seem very interested in becoming Americans. Just must be interested in grabbing a generous share of the benefits of being American, while still scorning the U.S. Screw 'em. Arrest them if they are in violation, and send their butts packing. Bet they've got more than enough U.S. dollars to hire an attorney, anyway.
To: John Lenin
Question; did they have proper and valid documentation of their privilege (note to ACLU, until they become citizens, which no one is claiming they are, it's a privilege, not a right) to be here now? If not, oh well. If so, then Houston, we have a problem.
I'd suspect that it's the former.

A foreign student in the US on a student visa has to have a job offer from a US firm in order to get a green card. Most employers (incl. Universities) are willing to sponsor foreign students to get a work permit (first step toawrds getting a green card) once they have made them a job offer. The criteria for getting a work permit are very strict, incl:
1) Proof that the position could not be filled even after a 6-12 month job search, incl. ads in prominent local newspapers and trade/industry journals.
2) Written statement from the employer justifying the hiring of a foreign national, including job description, why they are preferred over existing US candidates, and what qualifications set them apart.
3) Letters of reference from a professor at the university (for candidates with Masters degree and above).
4) Letter stating the candidates' qualifications are requisite for the job from someone in the industry other than the hiring manager.
5) Details of job offer showing that the salary is competitive per industry standards.
6) W2 and other tax forms to be submitted while the above process is going on.
After work permit has been issued, a petition is made for a green card if the person is still employed by the same employer. This requires an FBI fingerprint test, physical check-up, and sometimes, an interview, before a green card is granted. At that point, the person is considered a Permanent Resident.

Thanks for the information. I have actually already been offered a position in the private sector and am seriously considering it. This kind of cr*p at the university is one of the reasons I feel I will be happier if I am not in that environment.
This particular student dazzles the profs; not because of any special talent, but because among the foreign students this person stands out for English proficiency and competence in writing and public speaking. Most of the foreign students in our school are from East Asia and lack English speaking and writing skills, plus, they fit the cultural stereotype of shyness and do not promote themselves. This student is bright AND will be the first Muslim hired by the college; I am pretty sure "diversity" was the motivation because there are many other intelligent and accomplished doctoral students.
Still, it infuriates me that the college will be claiming that they cannot hire a citizen with the same skills in order to get a green card; but no one will say boo about it - this university is the center of P.C. in our state and this will go off without a hitch. It will increase our "diversity" quota, that's for sure. This particular student started classes looking very Westernized, then after a summer at home in Jordan, returned wearing the full head wrap/cover and has worn it ever since. The timing was poor, though. Right after she came back all suited up in her Muslim fundie garb, the WTC/Pentagon were attacked. In the big picture, this has probably actually contributed to her accomplishment of getting a job offer from a Division I land grant research institution. ARGHHHHH!!!!!!!

Nope, sometimes I disagree with people I consider very intelligent and thoughtful, and carefully reconsider my position. Well then, I'd be interested in your reasons why you think Lott and Ashcroft are on the 'same circuit'.

The arrests were part of a post Sept. 11 program that requires all males over 16 from a list of 20 Arab or Middle East countries, who do not have permanent resident status in the United States, to register with U.S. immigration authorities. Here's an idea - how about making them register when they first get here? And then - now here's the real brain-teaser - keeping track of them until say, they leave or become US citizens? </rolling eyes>

The Japanese who were rounded up in WWII were US CITIZENS, some of whom had been here for several generations. They posed no threat to this country, in fact many volunteered to fight against Japan and fought valiantly. It is rank RACISM that prevents people like those on this forum from seeing the injustice of this US govt action against its own citizenry at that time.

Hundreds of Muslim Immigrants Rounded Up in Calif.
They didn't round up enough of them.
Last night I abandoned my bus and walked home.
Friends of these violators of our INS regulations were in the streets protesting
(at the Federal Building in West Los Angeles)...and traffic was jammed solid.
I live about 3 miles from where I work. I walked home faster than the bus would have gotten
me home...thanks to these peckerwoods.
I'll give it to most Muslims, they really know how to win friends and influence people...
(end sarcasm...)

You don't think any Arab Christians have been arrested?
In the few interviews I've heard with Palestinian Christians, I wouldn't mind
our guvmint keeping an eye on the ones who arrive in the USA.
In interviews they sounded like mind-numbed robots who are in love with Arafat.

About time illegals are being rounded up. All of them should be -- the Shoe Bomber, for example, was from England.
A while back Rivera showed on his show how Mid East terrorists were smuggled into this country from Mexico. We sure need to protect our borders as well as deport anyone not legally here.
