LOTT: Let me go back to the roots that you referred to. First of all, you, you know, you are who you are by virtue of where you are born. I didn't create the society I was born into. In fact, I was born to parents that had very meager means.
My dad was a sharecropper. He raised cotton on somebody else's land. My mother did teach school in a three-room schoolhouse. When they came to Pascagoula, my dad worked in a shipyard.

Ya, the "we" thing was a bit annoying. It I suspect would be particularly annoying to southern Republicans who have opposed segregation all their lives, and have never chatted it up with the CCC, or said how much they loved Jefferson Davis and his values. A left coast type like myself can just laugh it off as ludicrous.

The next interview....Trent Lott,"You know Tom, not Uncle Tom,I clearly meant to not convey that, Tom, many people consider President Clinton as our first black president,and rightly so.....he was clearly very black, but anyway,if you remember our black president was in some trouble himself,and Ive changed a lot since then,Ive grown a lot....But black President Clinton was in a lot of trouble and I helped him all I could ....It was tough and I have grown but I helped him a lot....."

Howlin, I am saying this right up front, if Lott resigns or is pushed out over this issue, you could elect the most conservative senator in the senate and he will be so terrified of what happened to Lott he will never challenge a racial program that comes up for a vote. I don't care who you are, in public life there is skeleton in the closet that will be used against you. This is not a good thing that is happening here and within a week of the new majority leader's term FreeRepublic and the conservative press will be calling him/her a sell out. Lott is gone and the only question remains if he will stay in the senate but in the big picture it does not matter. Borking worked again and it will continue to work because we let it. Lott is gone so maybe the forum can move on to other things.

You can continue to scream that this was done to Lott, but it wasn't. He did this to himself.

And he surely did NOT help himself tonight.

If you think I'm mad here in North Carolina, imagine how thrilled the people in Mississippi are -- or will be when they wake up in the morning and realize that old Trent sold them out to a bunch of race baiters?

I hope Trent has plans for after 2006. And he has nobody to blame except himself. He GAVE them the ammunition on a silver platter.
