He isn't the leader of the Republican Party, he is the chosen leader of the Senate by other Senators who feels he works well with them.
If Lott resigns, the Senate will go back to 50-50 and then Lincoln Chaffee will be the man who sets the agenda, not your mythical "great new leader", who will be next up for the meat grinder.
You can't humiliate Lott when the issue is racism and expect him to take that kind of a smear and stick around.
Lott was in the backcountry fishing when the Dems jerked his remarks into an issue after the Louisiana election was safely pocketed, and that's why it took a couple days for him to get to a press conference. The Dems deliberately waited till after the election to start their drum beat.
But what upsets me is that conservatives who have issues with Lott decided to pile on giving the impression to the country that they agree that Lott is a racist, when truth be told, I'll bet many of the complainers at FR are more racist than Lott.
