A depressing post, but it has your usual clarity and grasp of the strategic situation. Unfortunately, I'd have to mutter glum agreement with it.

As you can see from this post, there are some on Free Republic that the PC-ers have gotten to, when they start seeing "segregrationism" and "Jim Crow" in a birthday tribute to a hundred-year-old relic from the same past that Robert Byrd comes from.
But this Freeper ain't buying what they're selling. ;-)

As I said on another thread, this whole affair has the stink of an all night bull session at the DNC headquarters after the November election, with James Carville presiding. "How do we regain upper hand, how do we energize our base, how do we dominate the marketplace of ideas while being in the minority?"
I predicted here in November that the RATS would recover quickly.

Such as things that aren't reported. Surely you can cite one example. After all, you said that thousands of politicans have said more stupid things since Lott opened his mouth and inserted his foot.
To: dirtboy
That is immaterial. They stood up to Lott's stupidity, and his subsequent failure to disavow segregationism. and so have you.
Thank you for proving my point.
I expect to never see you ever write about the evils of political correctness.
I have this bookmarked.

Do you think giving in to Kwesi McFume will make him weaker or stronger in the end ?
To: dirtboy
You'll have to show me those remarks Lott made in support of Jim Crow and segregation...all I heard was one Republican praising another Republican.
You read a lot in to "Strom , you'd make a fine President."
Reagan gave you the 11th commandment...Reagan was a wise man who too many Republicans have forgetten.
BEAM ME UP AGAIN!

If we give in to Jackson and Sharpton do you think they will go easy on us next time they dig something else up on some other GOP'r ? This is Bush and Rowe trying to get rid of Lott with out taking the blame. They figure if they play it cool and behind the scenes they can take Lott down and put their own boy in. Bill Frist will be the new fair haired boy.
But If I were running the Democratic campaign in 2004 in Dixie, I would run ad after ad stating how Bush would not lift a finger to help good ole boy Trent Lott. Bush let Trent be destroyed just for for being Red Neck southern.
About 15 to 25 percent of the White vote in Dixie could be soured enough on Bush to make them stay home on election day 2004. If the Democrats are smart enough to negative campaign Bush as the anti-red neck that stood by while they destroyed Trent Lott they can win Lousianna, Mississipi, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. That will be way more than enough to elect a Democrat president in 2004.
All it would take to work is for Lott to be as neutral in 2004 as Bush is now.
There are a couple of million Trent Lott's in the South. All they Democrats have to do is get them to stay home on election day in 2004. You don't suppose that would occur to Billy Boy Clinton now do you?

It's been a calculated hit-job since Day 1. Does anybody think that if Trent Lott stepped away from the position of Majority Leader that this will all go away?
Wait till Pickering and other Bush's judges come up for confirmation hearings. If they oppose affirmative action, they will be accused by the Democrats and the leftie media as being Jim-Crow loving segragationists.
This "scandal" is just like what happened to Clarence Thomas back in 1991. The media's effort to smash a Republican President and the Republican Party. It worked in 1991 and, sadly, it's working again in 2002.
To: Common Tator
This is working out perfect. All the lame excuses of overlooking the racism in the RAT party may make good sound bites but beneath the surface most people know exactly what they are buying into.

"You'll have to show me those remarks Lott made in support of Jim Crow and segregation...all I heard was one Republican praising another Republican."
Lott voiced suppport for Strom and the ticket he led.
Apparently, and the very reason we are discussing this stuff today, Strom seemed mighty parcial to the black issue.
The Dixiecrats did not separate themselves from the Democrats in 1948 based upon national defense, fiscal policy or union vs. corporate matters. Compare and contrast the 1948 Democratic Platform with that of the Dixiecrats. The Dixiecrat differed about segregation. Period.
This is what Thurmond said in a nationwide radio address on the eve of the 1948 election:
"Don't forget the so-called civil rights program would bring about the end of segregation in the South, forcing mixing of the races in our hotels, in our restaurants, in our schools, in our swimming pools and in all public places. This change in our customs is not desired by either the white or the colored race."
Remember these great words from the platform that Lott said would have changed this county for the good:
(From the Dixiecrat ballot, with Strom at the top of the ticket)
REMEMBER
A vote for Truman electors is a direct order to our Congressmen and Senators from Mississippi to vote for passage of Trumans so-called civil-rights program in the next Congress. This means the vicious FEPC-anti poll tax-anti-lynching and anti-segregation proposals will become the law of the land and our way of life in the South will be gone forever.

You don't suppose that would occur to Billy Boy Clinton now do you? We won't even have to wait until 2004 to see how this plays out. Election day in Mississippi is on November 4th, 2003. If Lott is hanged out to dry (or vice-versa), the election results will be telling on how those "million Trent Lott's" voted (if at all).

"There are a couple of million Trent Lott's in the South."
Is this the Campaign slogan you are suggesting?:
"Vote for us Republicans: Under the surface... were racist crackers just like you!!!"

I wonder if this story would still be in the news if Noonan and Krystal and Bush had the balls to stand up against race-baiters. That is immaterial. They stood up to Lott's stupidity, and his subsequent failure to disavow segregationism.
First of all he did disavow segregationism repeatedly. You must have missed his speeches.
Secondly where were you and all these principled pubbies before this story broke? If it is not about cow-towwing to the racebaiters why weren't all these pundits calling for a new Majority Leader a few weeks ago when the Senate voted for him?
To: Bluntpoint
From Michael Medved's column:
On a national radio broadcast, in response to the friendly and sympathetic questioning of Sean Hannity, he stated: "I'm sorry for my words. They were poorly chosen and insensitive and I regret the way it's been interpreted. Actually, when I think back about Strom Thurmond over the years, what I have seen is a man that was for a strong national defense and economic development and balanced budgets and opportunity and that's the kind of things that I really had in my mind."
This is a transparent lie: Defense issues and balanced budgets played no role in Thurmond's presidential campaign in 1948. The official platform of his breakaway Dixiecrat Party never even mentioned "economic development" or "national defense" in any of its nine planks and Thurmond expressed few disagreements with Truman on such issues.
That platform did, however, affirm that "we stand for the segregation of the races and the racial integrity of each race
We oppose the elimination of segregation, the repeal of miscegenation statutes
" Thurmond's disagreement with the Democratic Party had nothing to do with "balanced budgets" and focused almost entirely on issues of race.
To: dirtboy
It's politically correct to condemn segregrationism and Jim Crow, and to hold GOP leaders accountable for their public statements? Woof. But only when the Dem's say it is time. Woof woof!

Alarm! Alarm! Alarm!
I got me a racist.
Abuse button is sticking. Abuse button is sticking. All it does is raise my bid on Ebay for "George Wallace" signed fluffy bunny slippers.

This whole post is a transparent lie. They were honoring Thurmond for his LIFETIME of service. Lott's words were ill chosen but his intent was obvious. He was congratulating Strom for all the good things he has stood for. Insisting that his words MUST be taken literally is as dishonest and bigoted as it gets.
To: Once-Ler
"Strom has also been a Republican for 30 years, all without killing one black man...I dare say that's a better record than many black men can boast. There! I said it...now it's your turn liberal...get me banned for racism. "
Well, Once-ler, I tried. Technical malfunction. I owe you one. I sent your infomation via snail mail to FreeRepulic. However, since the anthrax scare, they never open any of my mail.
