If being on the front page advances conservatism, what's the harm?

Fair enough. But my money is still very much on Nickles...in my opinion he has played this perfectly...and he has been in position to follow Lott for quite some time.

Here is classic bit of Mark Steyn wisdom on this very subject:

It's a great read, and spot on.

Well, you have your opinion and I have mine. I don't happen to think that the ML position has anything to do with the agenda when the party head is in the WH. The minority leader position is only important when the opposite party is in the WH. The ML will push the agenda that the president presents and that's all there is to it. If you want to give up on PBA, then let old Lott stay there or push for Nichols who will be quickly made the minorty leader because Chafee will defect. It just depends on how strongly you feel about getting a PBA bill passed, conservative judges confirmed etc. But if you don't care about any of that just keep sticking to principle and explain that to your kids as they watch all those liberal judges changing the law to suit their agenda.

Damn Rove; he should've approved it. Then we'd be wondering how Lott would have screwed us out of a 52-48 majority.

There's a new thread on FR that is quoting Lott that he won't quit the senate if he's ousted... You were right...

If Chaffee defects we still control the Senate.

So you are in favor of allowing blackmail by Chaffee, who can't swing the balance all by himself, to determine who is chosen as ML?

WOuld it be this one? If this were true, one would have to wonder why some people are so much of a "Johnny-defend-lately" attitude when it comes to Lott.

FWIW, I'm not entirely convinced that Lott would stay as a mere Senator; what I do know is if he were to remain Republican "leader", the Pubbies will be in the majority by July, and nothing positive (e.g. conservative judges being confirmed) will have gotten done by then.

Be very, very quiet EV, looks like Gore just gave us a HUGE gift with his announcement. If we allow it it will knock this whole thing off the front page and the whole question could just be moot.

Please, please let this thread die.

Front page is good. What we do with the front page is the question?

I agree 100 percent with what you've said -- and not just on this post. I've been reading everything you've posted these last few days and you certainly have given us plenty of facts to deal with. IMO, you've been more than fair in what you've posted.

Lott no more "forgot" to mention what the White House wanted him to say than he "forgot" what Strom Thurmond ran on. As I have said, I have personally talked to two people who were at the birthday party and they told me that when he said it, there was a GASP in the room because, even if Lott didn't "get it" with regard to just what a "tactical" error he had made, everybody else did. (Leaving aside, of course, the ones who actually BELIVED what he said was right.....LOL)

I'll admit I've been one of those who haven't schooled myself on Lott's past, and have based most of me feelings on his recent unproductivity, to put it kindly, representing the GOP.

Honestly, after reading what you posted about his MOTHER, I would say Lott hasn't fallen far from the tree; at the very least, he's disengenous.

And considering how well he seems to "play the game," how would we EVER tell when he was telling the truth -- from his heart -- and when he was saying something politically expedient for his sorry butt.

Personally, I am NOT looking forward to the pandering on BET tomorrow night. It could well be the low point of this year for the GOP.

Looking back, it seems it would have been much better for Lott to have gotten off his sorry butt and driven to Miami, gone on TV, and just admitted that he, in fact, use to believe those things but doesn't anymore.

And as I have said continually, if WE knew it was the wrong thing to say, why didn't the leader of the GOP party in the United States Senate know it?

The fog lifts somewhat: The Frist story is from NEWSWEEK, via Drudge. The story is that Rove wants Lott out and Frist in. No details provided.

I like Mitch McConnell because he is a standup kind of guy and willing to mix it up for what he believes in. Frist and Nickles are okay, too. I just like McConnell--think he and Frist are more capable of behind the scenes planning and getting the job done. I have heard Nickles on several issues when he just did not really get to the nuts and bolts of the matter at hand.

This is going to be the battle right here

There's not going to be any battle. It's already a done deal, and Lott will resign this coming Friday afternoon. Most likely after 5PM.
