Black conservative pingIf you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

Black republicans are very adept with the race card.
Based upon this statement, I can understand your distress (distress means sad) at this whole Lott matter. I wouldn't put up with it if I were you. I would leave the Republican party just to show the rest of us. Yeah! That's the ticket. (one that I am happy to buy.)

As long as Byrd and Hollings are in the Senate so shall Lott be.
You know, that's just what I live for: to have the moral values of a Democrat.
To: Rome2000
Apparently no amount of debauchery is sufficent to make a Democrat apologize, much less resign. If they're OK with letting clinton stay in office after perjury, obstruction of justice, and probably rape, I'm OK with letting Lott stay in leadership (for now) because he said something "insensitive."

Notice the conservatives are coming out against Lott. I'm guessing that's because they're dreaming of a conservative Senate majority leader.
Well, consider this:--IF Lott steps down AND stays in the Senate---and a conservative Senate Majority Leader emerges....Chafee and Snowe will have their reason to bolt the party.
See, your premise is wrong. They are coming out against Lott because it is the right thing to do. Period. Olympia Snow is a loyal Republican. Chaffee, I am sure, is just itching to become another Jumpin' Jim what with all the power he now has.

I figured that if I were going to die fighting for democracy, I might as well do it in Winston-Salem and save myself a long trip across the Pacific.Love that sentence.
And I'm afraid he's right.
I have since I heard the actual clip Monday night.
The weak and clueless apologies have only made it worse.

It is time to stop the madness and fight back. As long as Byrd and Hollings are in the Senate so shall Lott be
But none of them should be Senate Majority Leader.

"A mind changed against its will is of the same opinion still." Based upon the earlier post by this guy "Texasforever", you are wasting your breath. You see, with him its those darkies that are the whole problem.
To: kattracks
Except he never mentioned segregation.

Me too. That's why that stupid statement by "Texasforever" who said "Black republicans are very adept with the race card.", just chaps my ass.
To: Texasforever
If he is driven out over this, you can put the strongest conservative in the position and he will be forever muzzled when it comes to social programs because EVERY one of them are built around race.
I think it would be something other than the end of the world if we didn't have a Senate Majority Leader who is gutless and stupid.

Except he never mentioned segregation.
Two boys are sitting in the cottonpatch eating watermelon and chittlins and one says to the other...
What he said was not prejudiced. He could have meant any number of things by it. How do you even know the "boys" are black?
Don't you think there is a limit to how much you should have to contort yourself to bend things to what you wish they were.

Except he never mentioned segregation.
Lott said we'd have been much better off if Strom Thurmond had been elected President, and Mississippi was proud to have voted for him.
Thurmond's candidacy was pro-segregation and anti-civil rights at its core. That was the reason for its existence, and Mississippi was one of the most racist States in the Union at the time.
On its face, Lott's statement appears to laud that. There's no getting around that sad fact.
It's for other reasons that we conclude Lott isn't racist, not because of his statement. So his statement about Thurmond was breathtakingly stupid.
The only way to appropriately mention Thurmond's '48 candidacy would have been to hold Strom up as an example of how men and nations can and do change for the better, and to note the honor and courage of such change.
Unfortunately, it appears that Lott has more than a 20 year History of being too stupid to understand that.

I agree with Sowell.
We cannot have Lott resign the senate, but he can easily step aside from the Maj.Ldr role. It will send a message to blacks that the Pubbies are serious about this...they can contrast it so easily with 3K Byrd of WV.
Lott need not even admit that he meant anything racist, but that he's doing it to avoid distraction.

Unfortunately, I don't believe any longer that doing this could be used as a sign to blacks that we are serious about this. We had that opportunity if we got out in front of this. At this point, with the drumbeats from the left being the loudest, it won't show we are serious as much as it will show that we react to political forces.
It does not change in my view the fact that Lott needs to step down as leader, but the opportunity to use this as a positive passed during the four days it took for there to be any response.
To: William McKinley
I disagree. It's been only a few days. Everyone knows that nothing in the political world happens in terms of days, but rather in terms of weeks/months.
I just heard on Fox that the issue is NOT the liberals, because they have never repented of KKK Robert Byrd. The issue is the CONSERVATIVES who are calling for Lott's stepping down.
"Listening to the voices of conservatives, Senator Lott stepped down today from his post as Senate MajLdr."
I think the above would EASILY fly.

Wait a minute, are you saying that Blacks wouldn't vote for Republicans because of the minor gaffe by Trent Lott at a birthday party, but would vote for Democrats despite the twice spoken 'N' word by Robert Byrd? You have no idea. Just this morning, a (black woman) caller to John Matthews, when presented with Byrd's racism, said, "But he's our racist."
Besides, this isn't about the black vote. It is about Trent Lott handing Dan Rather and friends a club to beat republicans with. Even with decisive action against Lott, he will probably cost the republicans several close elections (1-2%) with his idiot mouth. Do nothing and you can double the swing.
To: xzins
Maybe you are right. I hope you are. We'll see.
To: Sabertooth
Lott will not be Majority Leader by this weekend at the latest. The tide is rising against him.
