Leave it to you to come up with the perfect(final?) solution.

Not everyone could pull it off ... in your case, though, practice may well indeed make perfect.

Honoring your father is great. Stealing my money to do so isn't.

Have you paid your parents back for the money you "stole"?

Good luck for us both, I don't need your money to honor my father.

Rooting for the elderly, their dignity, and their right to live to the fullest extent they can.

Ugh. There's nothing dignified in living on welfare.

My parents gave to me willingly, as I will do for them if or when the time comes. Currently, my husband and I take care of his mother who is too old to take care of herself. She accepts no taxpayer dollars. None.

Being old and poor sucks even worse. I recommend you not try it.

Okay, good. I got the impression from your comment that you equated our Socialist Security program and other such welfare-for-old-people programs with honoring our parents. Sorry I misunderstood you.

That's OK, there's a randian cure for damn near everything.

;-)

Old and poor is better than being a thief. I'll die before I ever force other people to take care of me.

Social Security is NOT welfare. I am 4 years away from being eligible and what I would get is actually pocket change but you can bet the farm I am going to collect it because for 30 years I was forced to pay the maximum amount into it. However, the best part is it pisses off drones like you and the Hanky.

"Euthanasia (and assisted suicide) will be in place well before it's his turn to take some "individual responsibility" and off himself instead of shuffling along to a natural death every bit as unplanned and unexpected as his conception."

I know it's an unpopular view here, and I expect to get flamed, but I hope you're right on this. I've seen one relative survive a stroke for three years, bedridden, unable to communicate or even move...A fate so horrible I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I witnessed another relative die a long drawn out death from ALS, and I have an elderly relative going through Alzheimer's right now.

I don't fear death. I do fear a fate such as the ones outlined above. If that's in the cards, I hope when the times come there's a method that will allow me to exit with a little dignity and autonomy intact. So fire away folks, you won't change my mind on this.

Your analogy is broken. Primarily because I don't continue to draw on my parents resources ad infinitum. These seniors will suck us dry.

Apparently. Hell, I'm Mr. über-pragmatist in a lot of ways, but even I can't argue with the notion that society has some sort of moral obligation to care for those members that are incapable of caring for themselves. My preferred solution is to make sure that people have the means to take care of themselves, but I also know damn well that there are always going to be some people for whom that just isn't possible, given their particular circumstances.

Whatever. I'm off for the night - I'll leave you to argue against setting old folks adrift on passing icebergs ;)

It figures. You're sidling up to the government tit. Just remember, old man, that the rest of us aren't exactly going to throw you a party for bleeding us for the next 30 years.

Social Security is NOT welfare.

Oh please. It's money coming from people who work going to people who don't. It's a simple tranfer of dollars from those with ability to those with needs. It's welfare, plain and simple.

Such hip lingo for a dude but four years shy of skimming off our checks to make his point in pocket-change!

Probably all the Sir Gawain threads what have kept you so young at ... young at ... well, youthful sounding.
