Welcome to Free Republic geedee. I see you've been initiated. I've been here since 98 and this is one of the few times I think some people are out of line. There are millions of people in the U.S. who would wish for a perfect world where guns were not necessary. Personally, I am frightened to death of guns. I shiver when I see one, but I would pick up one myself to defend the right of every American to own one if they so desire. The uncertainty of who might have a gun is a great deterrant to bad characters, and that uncertainty, in a sense, is my protection. Have you purchased your ever-ready flame retardent suit yet?

I hope someday you realize the gun or guns had nothing to do with your loved one being murdered.
Your anger is misplaced. I can understand how you feel and I also know it would be ridiculous to force people to enjoy an object or activity.
Thanks for the article and I hope you can find some peace.

If they wanted to states probably could ban all firearms. Cities have passed laws banning firearms going back to Morton Grove, Illinois in the 70's and those laws have been upheld. Of course such a law would be political suicide so states like California nibble away at the edges with bans on assault weapons and the like.

There's no reason for some of the venom. I think there's a hint in the bible that in the perfect world instituted by God there won't be any need for guns.

Bulldog is right, my utopian desires will never happen. I didn't explain myself properly and am receiving the bashing one deserves when that happens.
Instead of explaining my utopian dreams, I think I'll just weather this storm. Describing my loved one who was murdered and her situation would only feed some more wolves.

ALL "assault weapons bans" are un-Constitutional based on this ruling. But that ruling, it was United States v. Miller I believe, didn't address the issue of assault weapons, it ruled solely on sawed off shotguns. The court can use it as precedent if it chooses but this legislation will be examined separately. My prediction remains that since this deals with a specific type of weapon and not gun ownership as a whole, the court will either uphold the ruling or refuse to hear it.

Fear is from ignorance.
I don't expect you to find an instructor to overcome your fear and suddenly start trying out for the Olympics.
I hope you can understand that you have a phobia. It's an unnatural fear that's stopping you fron learning about firearms. Reality-wise, there is a good chance that you wouldn't be able to defend yourself in the situation you described if a picture sends you into shivers.
It will have to come from you whether you want to live in fear or not. At one time in my life, I started to aquire two phobias. I could easily lived with them but I knew that they would have hampered my life to the point I wouldn't have enjoyed life as much as I do. Life should be lived without fear and phobias should be dealt with and not hidden away. Life is too short to be denied experiences.

Have you purchased your ever-ready flame retardent suit yet?Nah, even when you're the Porker of Honor at a FReeper pig roast most of the FReepers make clear, precise, and valid points. Those who just lash out are those who stand in the middle of a crowd, secure from harm, and shout, "Kill him!" I suspect they don't post many items so they don't have to take any stands. I suspect most of their responses are one-liners Bill Maher wouldn't think was funny. illbay and anniegetyourgun and others have taught me to shrug them off.
But thanks for your concern.

Don't forget that the 2nd amendment states that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed, which infers that the right to bear arms precedes the existence of the U.S. government.

The ruling went way beyond just upholding the ban on assult weapons, the ruling stated there is no individual right to bear arms, that means any state in the ninth district can ban all firearms under this ruling. This perfectly reflects a problem with judicial activism. Courts are generally supposed to make judgments and rules of law as narrow as possible. Occasional exceptions, of course, but this not being one of them.

I am sorry you lost someone dear to you. My son was murdered by a car but I didn't wish that we could all go back to walking. The first year is the toughest, don't be ashamed to cry.

My friend, I would apologige for some people's venom here, but it is not my position to apologize for others.
That being said, your statement wasn't offensive, just had a hint of idealism. Guns are nasty suckers (I own two, a .357 and a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun, for home-defense purposes) but they are a net benefit.

"I personally would like to see all guns disappear from society"
Great. Then brute force would reign instead of justice and individual liberties.
You wouldn't happen to be a big, strong guy who can take things by force from most people, would you?
