I have a great Aunt who lives in Mexico City (she HATES it). She tells me the newspapers there all the time say that they're planning on conquering the Southwest of the US.
That is all the talk down there, among the upper classes.

As the number of Mexicans living in the U.S. has ballooned (growing from 2 million to 23 million over the past thirty years), so have the feelings of anti-Americanism among them. While the many Mexicans living in the U.S. are still law-abiding and loyal, there are disturbing signs that anti-Americanism is on the increase. Imagine if they were Muslims and the area in question were East Coast (the craddle of US). Then you could understand how Serbs feel about Kosovo.

Perhaps someone could fill in the details, but as I understand it the Mexican revolution was one of the first leftist revolutions although they did not adopt the explicit ideology or terminology of the socialist international. I think we would call it 'populist' but many of the Bolshevicks looked to the Mexican revolution as something that harmonized well with their own.
What is appearing in the newspapers is this leftist view 'institutionalized.'

The numbers would suggest that they're already half way to being the majority in some states. If they voted to secede is there anything that can legally be done to stop it?

This article represents the thoughts of most Mexicans I have been acquainted with. The loss of the Texas Republic is foremost in their minds. This is taught in school from first grade on up. This is something that our President and Congress have escaped or ignored, to our peril.
There will be a reclaiming of the Texas Republic if this illegal immigration continues. There is much sentiment for economic reasons among the legal Hispanics for closing the border, but they can be swayed easily to jump on the Aztlan bandwagon. Our inaction is disappointing to them and most feel that they might as well join the crowd of insurgents.

We've already got a bunch of FReepers on record as supporting the concept of "Aztlan" as long as they can come up with the votes to do it.
They're called "Neo-Confederates" and they recognize the right of any region of the country to secede if there is popular support for it.

Good question. You should ask it in one of the "Lincoln is Satan and the War of Northern Aggression was all about tariffs and had nothing to do with slavery" threads, to see what the supporters of that secession attempt have to say.

Most of them avoid the question by saying "that's a different situation." Some of them admit that if you can secede for slavery (or "tarriffs," as they disingenuously insist), you can secede for just about any reason as long as you have the votes.

What are we to make of residents whose first act as new Americans was to break the law? Apologists for illegal immigration (like President Fox) say that poverty in Mexico drives the hopeless to enter the U.S. in search of a better way of life. But it is impossible for this country to absorb such huge numbers of largely poor, illiterate people,
especially when assimilation is the last thing they have in mind. Close the border with whatever it takes, deadly force has become neccisary, IMO

I think that the last time several states voted to secede, the union armies had a little bit of input.
