Was he Army or Navy? Navy would be my guess. Wasn't aware of the decorations for valor and the 3xPHs.
Its funny how things change. After WWII, through the 60's, a man couldn't get elected unless he had military service. Now we have democrats & repubs alike willing to risk the lives of those who serve. Guess I'm sour on politicians in general. However, no one risked our soldier's lives for more worthless reasons than President Clinton.

Cuba Gooding Jr. played Carl Brashear, the first African American, then also the first amputee, US Navy Diver in "Men of Honor". He lost his leg while in the service and he fought to remain on active duty and dive.
Maybe Cuba could play Rush In "Men of Honor II: This Time It's Serious, It Is A Cyst!!!".

I couldn't agree with you more, JS, a truly execrable comment from sinkspur. Limbaugh skipped Vietnam because of an operable cyst and now he's a leading hawk on Iraq now that someone else (or someone else's son) is going to do the fighting. Very similar to my trying to convince someone down the street to beat up the town bully and then bragging about what a "spoiled rich kid" he is when he does what I've been afraid to do. I don't agree with John Kerry, but what he did in Vietnam was not the mark of a "spoiled rich kid".

Navy. He was in the brown water navy, PBRs and the like.
People serve or don't serve for different reasons. I did my time in the Navy for one of the oldest reasons in the world - paid ROTC education. I wasn't a hero just because I served in the military any more than those who didn't serve are cowards. People make their own decisions and have to live with them.

My brother HAD that operation so he could serve in the Army during the war, that's how I know.

I don't put much credance in the opinion of warmongers that didn't spend one minute in defense of their country. Military service is important to some of us. I don't see anybody "warmongering."

Believe me, even if each and every Republican had served during wartime or served in the military, the Dems would probably then ask "Well, did you serve in a Combat Arms branch?"Essentially that's what they're doing when they demean GWBs service a a pilot, as opposed to Gore's service as a correspondent in Vietnam.

I don't know whether I've seen anybody warmongering here, but I've certainly READ it and it usually involves Iraq.

"With that said..."
""It's your problem if you are offended by my obvious amusement at the "anal cyst" being the cause of his deferment; I wouldn't have written, "hold your hat" if it was a bad back or heart condition, etc.""
"""If it was a legitimate medical condition that kept him out of Vietnam, then that's that. I work in the same suite with Nursing Faculty and I asked them about this type of cyst. Two said there are some that were indeed inoperable and it could be very serious."""
Please don't misunderstand. I claim no medical knowledge as to the seriousness of anal cysts, or whether they are enough to keep you from serving. I've been following the debate here with interest: some people say yea, others nay.
I was simply expressing my inner Beavis and Butthead, and I'll do it again now. "Anal Cyst -- heh heh heh!" ;)

So in other words Rush is saying that people like Dick Cheney and Trent Lott and Phil Graham and Pat Buchanan and Newt Gingrich and Danny Hastert and maybe even Rush himself would have served if they had been forced to serve? Thanks, I feel so much better about it now. Rush would have been 18 in 1969.....the year the draft lottery began. The others you mentioned would have been 23 or older in 1965 when the Nam draft began.....not likely candidates. I agree that Kerrey did his war effort and to my knowledge served well. And frequently this is a plus. Unfortunately, whatever wisdom he acquired from that honourable service has not translated to his politics....in my view.

From Merck Manual:
Pilonidal Disease
Acute abscess or chronic draining sinuses in the sacrococcygeal area.
Pilonidal disease usually occurs in young, hirsute white males. One or several midline or adjacent-to-the-midline pits or sinuses occur in the skin of the sacral region and may form a cavity, often containing hair. The lesion is usually asymptomatic unless it becomes infected, which is painful.
Treatment is by incision and drainage. Usually, one or more chronic draining sinuses persist and must be extirpated by excision and primary closure or, preferably, by an open technique (eg, cystotomy, marsupialization). Antibiotics are generally not needed.
How many soldiers were shot and patched up and sent back into action during vietman?
