A Freeper is talking to her now, but I didn't catch the screen name.
I didn't give it. "Sabertooth" gets put on hold longer.
To: Tom Jefferson
Hugh was trying to get her to say how many of the illegals are terrorists. That is a totally irrelevant question. I think this is a very relevant question because the answer is "we don't know". We should know, and we certainly need to know.

I agree with Torie. I heard the whole interview and while I agree 110% with what she said and what she was trying to say, she did poorly in her exchanges with Hugh. Hugh was focused on only one one and a half topics but that wasn't the point. Its his show and he can ask anything he wants. Michelle on the other hand answered most every question, including the quantitative one, with an anecdotal story. Whiles those stories are true and hit emotional buttons (at least mine) she failed completely in presenting a calm rational analysis of the problem. Instead, of answering a specific question she repeatedly would obfiscate and change the topic back to another anecdote.
Again, I agree with her 110% and I am sure she knows her stuff but to me she came across the way a lefty does, she operated on feelings and emotional forces rather than cold hearted logic. I do agree that the anecdotes are necessary to activate the uninformed, but Hugh was trying to go past that and raise the discussion to a more rational, intellectual level. In this one and only time I have heard her, she sounded very smooth and practiced while at the same time failing completely.

You don't have to tell me. Just yesterday, as I passed the local illegal "hang" on my way to work, I saw an illegal gabbing away on his cell phone.

put me on the michelle malkin pinglist, please.

This is a very emotional issue for a lot of people. Personally, I admire the illegals - they take enormous risks just to make better lives for themselves in this country.
If the illegals are in fact a problem, we can solve it in one of two ways:
* We can try and make Mexico a more prosperous country, so they stay down there; or
* We can eliminate all jobs up here, so they don't have any reason to be here.
I think President Bush has been trying to work with Vincente Fox on the first alternative. The second alternative would be extremely painful for everyone living in California, although as you know Governor Davis is working very hard to make it a reality.
From my perspective, people are people. Good people should be able to live and work here, because, to be honest, we need the help. Bad people should be thrown out. It would certainly appear that the INS is not up to the job; Michelle Malkin is extremely persuasive on that point in her book.
Has anyone tried to put together an impartial analysis of the effects of illegal immigration? I think many of you have come to the conclusion that it's bad, and then tried to work out the reasons, instead of looking at the evidence and being fair to both sides. I would really love to read a FAIR book on this subject.
Anyone have suggestions on this?

To: Torie
In fact, other than their illegal status, given their socio economic status, as a group they are remarkably law abiding.LOL! I guess you could say that if you overlooked the fact that a large percentage of illegal aliens use fake documentation, which is a crime, in order to get hired here in the U.S.

"Hugh was trying to get her to say how many of the illegals are terrorists. That is a totally irrelevant question. I think this is a very relevant question because the answer is "we don't know". We should know, and we certainly need to know."
Look, it is information we need to know, but we never will. It has nothing to do with the issue that we need to keep illegals from entering the country - whether they are terrorists or not. That is my point.
Michelle was making the point that it doesn't matter if an illegal is a terrorist or not. We don't have one law for illegal terrorists and another law for illegal non-terrorists. There is one law that says that you can only enter this country in certain ways legally.
Hugh seems to think it is ok to keep terrorists out, but we should look the other way if someone is sneaking into the country illegally if he is not a terrorist, but is coming here to better himself financially. I disagree with that distinction.

It would certainly appear that the INS is not up to the job; Michelle Malkin is extremely persuasive on that point in her book." From my perspective, legal immigrants are legal and illegal immigrants should be deported. I don't care how good they are as people, if they want to enter the United States, there are legal ways to do so. To enter illegally is to disregard the laws of the United States - and those laws should be enforced.
To: daviddennis
Has anyone tried to put together an impartial analysis of the effects of illegal immigration? Try doing some research at the Center for Immigration Studies. They have conducted extensive research including this report:
Tired and Poor: The Bankrupt Arguments for Mass, Unskilled Immigration
by Steven A. Camarota
National Review, September 3, 2001
"We at the Center for Immigration Studies estimate that the average Mexican immigrant will use $55,200 more in public services during his lifetime than he pays in taxes."
People are people, and I don't like anybody living off my tax money.

Obligatory pic.
To: Tom Jefferson
Oh, I agree with you; I just think that more could have been made of her answer, and she could have used the terrorist angle in her arguement.

I read the article (it took me a while to find it since your link didn't work), and it makes me wonder.
Wouldn't it make sense to simply allow illegals to work, but deport them if they requested social services?
That seems simple, clean and good for the economy.
D
To: daviddennis
Sorry about the link. I hate when that happens.
I case anyone else is interested this one should work:
http://www.cis.org/articles/2001/sac9-3-01.html
CIS has many studies that debunk the usual feel-good rhetoric of the leftists on illegals.
Deportation upon demand of social services would be a good start. I believe eliminating access to social services would deter many illegals from even crossing the border in the first place. (Since the Constitution does not give the Federal gov't. the authority to extend social services to anyone, I would be in favor of elimination for all, but that is another issue.)
However, social services is just one of many reasons not to allow illegals to come to America.
