Master sergeant facing discrimination charge

TRAVIS AFB - A Travis Air Force Base master sergeant who allegedly said, "Allah, damn it!" in front of a Sri Lankan-born Air Force Reservist faces court-martial proceedings starting Monday.

Master Sgt. Richard Giddens is being charged with dereliction of duty on board an aircraft where he engaged in racial, national origin or religious discrimination and made "a threat to injure another person," the Travis AFB Public Affairs Office said.

While base officials declined to say specifically what happened, friends within Giddens' squadron created an Internet posting that stated the incident occurred at Dover AFB, Del., earlier this year.

The posting said Giddens, a 22nd Airlift Squadron flight engineer with 23 years in the Air Force, grew impatient after the Reservist allegedly failed to fix a mechanical problem on a C-5, according to other members of his squadron.

Angry over what was described as a refusal to fix the problem, the flight engineer allegedly said, "Allah, damn it! Fix it!" in front of the Reservist, the posting stated.

A month later, the Reservist filed a discrimination complaint with the Dover AFB's Equal Opportunity Office.

The flight engineer was initially offered Article 15, or non-judicial punishment, by his commanding officer but he turned that down saying it was unjust, according to the posting.

Travis AFB Public Affairs said the posting had a considerable number of inaccuracies but wouldn't specify what was incorrect.
