One would think so, but not with the DIMocrats. Oh, no. we need even more expensive social programs to teach the underground right from wrong. Sheesh! Here in NY, I miss Giuliani.

But...but....on the left there is no right or wrong. No absolutes. If it feels good - do it!
They just want more money. Screw the murders. It decreases the excess population.
I guess they figure if abortion clinics can't decrease the minority numbers, the drug wars can.
The police are the lefts enemy! We've heard them trashed by the left how many times now?

Political Correctness kills and kills!

Political Correctness enables these drug gangs to roam and use LA as their killing zone without problems.

Call PC Moose so we can be looking for evil white conservative males driving a white van.

The blue zone has 13 murders for every 100,000 and the red zone has 1.something for every 100,000. This is from memory because my computer crashed a couple of weeks ago and I lost my links.

I'm against gun control in general, but I sure would feel safer in Japan.

You would, indeed, be safer in Japan than L.A..

But you would also be safer in Switzerland where it's mandated that every household must have a military assault weapon.

Maybe the "safer in..." arguments have nothing to do with gun control. Maybe they have more to do with the inhabitants.

They both should be legalized. Then the organized crime types go out of business and have to take up gainfull employment.

Don't kid yourself.

Criminals are criminals and will not find "gainful employment" merely because their last source of illegal (easy) money has dried up. These people prey, not pray.

Bring back the public gallows for serious crimes such as murder, rape and aggravated assault and you'd see a sharp decrease in the crimes - concurrent with a sharp decrease in the criminals as they are made public examples at the same time. A few might wise up and decide to go straight and get an honest job, but unlikely the habitual ones. They need to be permanently dealt with, not put away for a few years with others so they can get more clever criminal training while getting out in a few years to start the vicious cycle all over again.

That may be true to some extent, but when crime pays it makes it a lot easier to recruit new gang members. There have always been gangs, but the mega-gangs of LA are the product of drug money, plain and simple.

Unfortunately, new LAPD Chief Bratton has already demonstrated that he doesn't get it. He blamed the high murder rate on "the easy availability of guns".

The actions of these gang-bangers have absolutely nothing to do with gun laws.

I would phrase it a bit differently. Gun control laws have absolutely no impact on the actions of these gang-bangers. That is the real problem with gun control laws and liberals.

Why aren't the gangs obeying the laws?

I don't know, maybe we should send some former HCI folks and Democratic Party organizers to consult with the gang members, get their photographs, fingerprints, concerns, so that we can get an answer. (/sarcasm)

Are you sure? I have handguns

I suspect that some handguns and their ownership in LA is legal for the moment. But ownership is more restrictive than in other parts of the US.

My understanding is that LA has passed some speical anti-handgun laws regarding a minimum legal size (i.e. that a firearm is too concealable), which makes it illegal to buy, sell such handguns as some antique 32 ACP's I own (a Colt Model 1903 and a Savage 1907). It is my vauge understanding that the City also has some other outrageous handgun laws over and above the state regulations.

I have a son that goes to college in the LA area and lives off campus. He asked about taking one of my handguns with him to keep in his house (he is over 21). I advised him not to and suggested a shotgun instead.

According to the NRA California site the following restrictions apply to the entire state.

Starting October 1, 1993, no firearm capable of being concealed upon the person shall be delivered or sold unless the person receiving the firearm presents to the gun dealer a basic firearms safety certificate approved by the California Department of Justice.

Within 60 days of bringing a pistol, revolver or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person into this state, the person importing the firearm must complete and return a Department of Justice registration form or sell or transfer the firearm to a licensed dealer, sheriff or police department.

Commencing January 1, 2001, it is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 1 year in jail, to manufacture or cause to be manufactured, import into California for sale, keep for sale, offer or expose for sale, give, or lend any "unsafe handgun." ----- "Unsafe handgun" means any firearm capable of being concealed on or about the person that lacks a safety device, or fails a 600-round firing requirement test, or fails a drop test, as conducted by an independent laboratory certified by the Attorney General.

Therefore, you are probably right that it LA is less restrictive than say NYC, WA DC, or Chicago, but it is more restrictive than many other large cities. Thanks for keeping me honest.

I have a Colt Combat Commander, a Smith and Wesson revolver and a Ruger Blackhawk .357. All I bought by walking into a gun shop ... my favorite shop here in L.A. is B&B Sales. They were the shop that handed the assault rifles over the counter to the policemen who were out-gunned during the bank robbery a couple of years ago. They are an absolutely terrific shop in that they will take you and serveral models of guns out to the range (in this case the "Firing Line) so that you can try them out first.

There may well be new rules but I have not heard of them.

This has been on the books for a long time. Unless there is something specific about LA laws California isn't much stricter than Texas as far as handguns go, apart from the CCW law in Texas. California does have strict laws regarding "assault weapons" (Roberto-Russi).

I was able to purchase an extremely concealable Walther PPK in 380 in California.

The Rolling 60s gang deals rock cocaine and commits robberies and is connected to several Las Vegas casino robberies, police said.

They're into more than just drugs.

(shaking my head) Man, are you ignorant of inner-city life. Drugs are just one more reason for the hopeless ghetto youths to join gangs. Yeah, I can just see the Bloods and Crips applying at McD's once drugs are legal. I grew up about 3 miles from Watts and went to an 80% black high school - I know the cycle. You're naive.

Raised up in Hayward in the neighborhood just above Moreau Highschool. Could never understand the mindset of thw barrio vatos of "Calle A" or those of the DeCoto barrio in Union City. They were constantly making forays into each other's territories. Never shed a tear when one of them bit the dust either.

Of course I am. Gangs find drugs and prostitution profitable because of something else.
