The illegals come here for the freebies. Free school, free SSI, free medical and work. They take much more out of the economy, then they put back. Until the Mexican govt starts providing all of the bennies of the American govt.

Open borders isn't the only way to achieve this. We didn't have open borders here to prosper.

I agree --an economic team from the US could be the right approach, they need to change many of their laws also and of course do something stronger about their crime and corruption. Open borders is about the WORST way to build up a country because Mexico is losing many of it's poorer people but it's losing it's more ambitious poorer people who could become it's middle class if they were allowed that. What stays behind isn't what will make that a better economy but even worse. Instability in Mexico is very high because in some villages half the people have gone to the US. Sometimes they'll at least send money home but often that's just for a few months to a couple of years.

Many come for the freebies, many come to work but find without an education and without job skills, life is easier on welfare. Some are working hard and trying to advance and better their lives but those are the exact people Mexico needs if it ever hopes to become a country with a strong middle class. It very interesting sometimes to see a family that was dirt poor in Mexico quickly become middle class in the US ---and there is no good reason prosperity ends and begins at the US-Mexico border. It's the same land mass with very many natural resources on both sides.

It depends a LOT on where that family settles down. If they settle in with American-born and bred po' folks, they stand a higher chance of going on welfare. If they are in a largely immigrant neighborhood, they tend to not absorb our pathologies of poverty.

If I was living along the border I'd be doing the same thing.

I would move to the border If they would let me sneak up on illegals at night in a black ninja suit with a light saber..and some red glow in the dark glasses

.Now that would be fun...

Not if they had AK-47s, it wouldn't.

No, I'm merely assuming he's a hypocrite who doesn't care if his employees are illegal, but loudly opposes illegal immigration. I've run into a bunch of them out here.

I believe that if the United States put together an economic team to help them, Mexico could double their GNP in less than ten years.

According to a report on CNBC last night:
U.S. factory work pays an average of $20/hour
Mexico factory work pays an average of $2/hour (maybe it was $4/hour)
China factory work pays $0.40/hour (maybe it was $0.20/hour)

The report emphasized that thousands of U.S. and Mexican jobs were going to China. Something like 700,000 U.S. jobs had already gone to China.
An economic team might find itself in a position of not being able to bail fast enough to keep the boat from sinking. Not saying it's a bad idea. Just that things may be getting worse, both here and in Mexico -- but especially for Mexico with a much higher percentage of no/low skilled workers.

No, he's definitely fooled you. Lots of your "friends" out here want "something" (they never say what that "something" is) done about illegal aliens, but get really hostile and defensive when I suggest jail time for those who hire illegal aliens, and they have a tendency to hire day labor.

Maybe that depends on the part of the country they go to and that might depend on whether they want welfare or work. Here there aren't many American-born and bred po' folks around so immigrants landing on welfare are in the housing projects with other welfare immigrants. Those who are more willing to assimilate and learn English here seem less likely to be trying to get onto welfare. And of course some of the same reasons like unwed-motherhood --a girl in Mexico will cross the border to have a baby if she wants a life on welfare and easy citizenship. An intact family with a working father (and legal marriage) is less likely to seek welfare.

Also family reunification brings over many more types who would seek welfare because they can come legally by being sponsored and qualify for many programs like SSI and Medicaid, meanwhile more worthy immigrants who are willing to work for everything they get have a much harder time immigrating legally. The entire system should be revamped so that if we need more farm workers we get those over someone's elderly relatives who are coming because they want free health care and an SSI check and their sponsors never intended to financially support them.

I can see where people are becoming impatient with the government's inability to address this problem

It is not the government's inability, it is the government's refusal to address the problem.

You're right... especially that item from November 6 out of Reforma.... the one that outlines the operations of the Tepeyac Association of New York, and the blatantly traitorous offenses of one Joel Magallan Reyes, SJ, leader of that fifth-column band of Mexican leeches. That chunk of feces ought to be awaiting the ultimate punishment. His organization is probably a 501(c)(3), too. Magallan is blatantly aiding and abetting criminal invaders, and has been for years.

The only real statesman on the scene today is Tancredo. Wait and see, he will be the only one that can pull 2004 out for the Republicans.

Did you happen to catch O'Reilly tonight? He and Michelle Malkin are not happy about the INS and what this sorry administration has done to fix it since 9/11. I think this bunch of cowboys is going to be real unhappy that they didn't listen to the American people come 2004. Maybe sooner.
