--6 November 2002 Bermudan Bank Site Defaced
Hackers may have exploited a Microsoft operating system
to deface two Bermudan websites, including that of the Bank
of Butterfield. Bank officials say no customer data was compromised.
The site hosts are recommending that their clients who work with data
that needs to be protected switch to their Unix based hosting platform. [Here is the article]
[Editor's Note Schultz]: The recommendation in this news item should add a considerable amount of fuel to the "whose operating system is most secure" debate.]
We will see. I am reporting information gleaned from people actually doing the investigation. You are relying on an article published before the investigation is completed.
When all of the facts are out, and my information proves to be right, you will, of course, return to this forum and admit it, right?
I won't be holding my breath.
As I said, we will see when the investigation is complete.
I suggest that you stock up the condiments of your choice. You'll need them to flavor the words that you will be eating.
It's pretty obvious that you won't accept any data that doesn't fit into your NMB agenda. You'll pardon me if I don't take you too seriously.
I take network security seriously. That's why I run OpenBSD firewalls, Snort intrusion detection and IPSEC tunnels over wireless.
I take security seriously enough to not run Microsoft operating systems on my network.
I take the integrity of my data seriously. That's why I only save data to open, reliable formats. Even back when I used Office I only saved to RTF, WPF or XLS.
I take my customers seriously. And when they tell me that they want off of the Microsoft upgrade treadmill, away from the Microsoft EULA stupidity, and far, far away from Microsoft's death grip on their data, I help them get away.
I don't take apologists seriously. I didn't take Clinton apologists seriously. I don't take apologists for socialists seriously, and I don't take Microsoft apologists seriously either.
So unless you are so separated from reality that you think that Microsoft would do everything right if only we critics would leave them alone, face up to the truth.
The public defense of unethical behavior is unethical in and of itself.
Defending Microsoft's shady, unethical behavior casts shadows on your own integrity. Knowing your penchant for stating plainly that Microsoft is justified in doing the things that they have done, I wouldn't lend you money or leave you in the unaccompanied presence of children.
I did - and brought back a wife.
