Your moral relativism is showing

Is it? I think you, too, have mis-read my post.

Curious that you left out the Russians who opposed Stalin

From my post: "We applaud those Russians and Germans who fought communism and nazism"

What's curious is that you mis-read this. What does that reveal about you?

The question is, were the Germans who opposed Hitler and the Italians who opposed Mussolini right to do so?...if an American believes the US is similar to those tyrannies, is he right to oppose his country

One of the great moral questions. I would answer yes to both. You may not.

Assuming the man to have a deluded belief, is he somehow right, or the better for acting on it? Or are you saying that all opinions are of equal correctness, no matter whether well thought out and based in fact, or not

I do not think, nor have I ever said, that all opinions are of equal correctness. The idea is manifestly absurd. The idea that the earth is flat is of equal value with the idea that the earth is round? That said however we must recognize that no one has a sustainable claim to absolute certainty. We must all act on imperfect information - or not act at all. Reasonable people recognize this and try to guage the value of their opinions before engaging in actions with very serious consequences but at some point conscience must be your guide.

I just thought of a great example; the American civil war. Each side thought it was morally correct. Brother fought brother. Yet even to this day the justifications are debated.

Probably true. Which is why the American (or Western) strain of Anti-Americanism is so dangerous. The US intellectuals and academics on the Left want to us to “see things from their point of view” and “understand how our foreign policy causes them to hate us”. But to sit back and try to see the “big picture” is not a luxury we have when faced with irrational, blind hatred that wants to destroy us.

Too true. Too true. I wish I had some original answers...but I don't.

Speak softly but carry a big stick. Free speech. Freedom. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. Forums like this one. Patience and fortitude.

It's all been said before...and remains the best way.

I read your post as impugning my patriotism.

No. your judgement or your syntax. Whichever is appropriate.

The problem as I see it is not that some people disagree with American policies and procedures. That is all valid and totally American, and you'll see quite a few conservatives disagreeing with what Bush or America does.

What astonishes me and other conservatives is the amount of sheer hate for America displayed by protesters and posters on leftist forums like Dem Underground. You'll see these people condemn America for supposed "crimes" against other peoples, but you'll never see them condemn communist regimes or recognize the good that America has done. The same leftists ridicule conservatives for having a black and white attitude for looking at the world. But they themselves have this same attitude when discussing Republicans and conservatives. In short leftists certainly do have a good vs. evil view of the world the same thing they deride Republicans and conservatives for having.

I myself do not believe everything we've done, like the occupation of the Philippines, has been good. But the good America has done for its own people and the world far outweighs whatever bad things we've done. This is something leftists, blinded by Marxist theory, refuse to understand. So go ahead and disagree, but try to keep ideology out of the equation. Results are what counts, not theory.

Well then I apologize for my harsh reply.

But kicking me out of your foxhole for bad syntax? :)

I was astonished too at what I saw after 9/11. You'd think that event would have catalyzed everyone into putting aside partisan differences. But it didn't. People can justify/rationalize anything.

Sorry for the mistake. Your post #22 makes your original, as Shaw said of Wagner's music "better than it sounds." Surely there are many causes where reasonable men can come down on either side, but this is very different from saying that all causes are that way. Now it is clear that you don't think so either.

The older French, who lived through D-Day, who were prisoners of the Germans, are very grateful. It would bring tears to your eyes to see the reception an old American on our tour group got from an old Frenchman once it was discovered that he was former military.

But the younger generation seem hopeless and I, too, will never go back. Sneering, smarmy, self-satisfied people.
