"Why was this so close anyway? I thought Riley would win in a landside. Any thoughts?"

Siegelman was elected the first time on the promise to bring a state lottery to Alabama.(for the schools) The lottery referendum was soundly defeated. He used the state lottery again in this campaign and almost got elected again. I know some conservative Republicans who voted for Siegelman just for the lottery.

"I attended two of those in Mobile and one in Pensacola"

We atteded two or maybe three in Mobile. Was an awesome experience.

There is still a link to some pictures from one of the Mobile rallys on my profile, if anyone would like to see them.

Roll Tide Roll!

Thanks. I didn't know we had pictures on the Mobile rallies, I'll go look. There are pictures of the Pensacola rally in my bookmarks too.

...because the Legislature says you cannot.

AS IF ANY DEMOCRAT EVER LET THAT STOP THEM!

Siegelman's people are doubtless in touch with the NJ Dem party hacks as we speak.

If Riley is sure he won, he wouldn't object to a recount.

Wrong. In the first place, there is no reason for a recount, and there's no reason for the state of Alabama to have to pony up the bucks for the recount.

Second, Democrats don't see a recount as a chance to be sure of the results of an election. They see it as a chance to STEAL the election. Gov.-elect Riley's invocation of the memory of Florida is very appropriate.

Finally, Siegelman's own words, when he thought he'd won, betray him.

'Rats need to be taught a lesson, that the elective process is not there for them to exploit. They have brought shame and ridicule on themselves and on the USA far too often.

Time for Siegelman to take his own advice, and stop these silly shenanigans RIGHT NOW.

And let it also be added, that the law you mention was passed YEARS ago by a legislature that was about 98% Democrat.

(rather curious, because you'd think that a close election is the only reason you would want a recount in the first place)

Wrong again (haven't you had your orange juice this morning?)

Truly the ONLY reason for a recount is if there is credible reason to believe that a mistake was made, whether intentional or accidental.

In some states, it's true, the laws call for recounts automatically if there vote margin is very thin. But that's not the case in Alabama. In Alabama, it is assumed that if there is no fraud or reason to believe there was a mistake, a vote margin of one vote is not a reason for a recount.

If the legislature wants to revisit that in the future, that's fine.

But this garbage, like what happened in Florida in 2000 and in New Jersey a month ago, where you change a law by judicial fiat, for no reason other than that you don't like it and you've got sharp lawyers, has got to end.

The Clinton era of spitting on the law has got to come to an end. I'd rather it end NOW than later.

Personally, I'd like to see Riley win on a recount so that the 'Rats can't make hay of this on a national level.

They "made hay" of the 2000 election in Florida for the last two years. What did that get them?

I refer you to the results of the election last Tuesday for your answer.

Why do you assume they haven't? The problem with situations like this is that Democrats ignore facts, and just keep spinning.

They've done it time and time again. There's no reason to expect them to stop now.

...this is a double-edged sword that can and will be used against us later by the 'Rats when it is our guy that loses a close election.

Yeah, right. We all see how much they gained by calling Pres. Bush "selected not elected" and "illegitimate."

They're now on the outside looking in, and their prospects dim even further every day. They have turned into a party run by legal hacks and trial lawyers, and they haven't begun to realize how tired the citizenry is of it.
