"The more he spoke of his honor, the faster we counted the spoons." (Not certain but I think Dr. Johnson)

"Problems worthy of attack
Prove their worth--by hitting back."
--Piet Hein, Grooks

"By the time you say you're his,
Shivering and sighing;
And he swears his passion is
Infinite, undying...
Lady, make a note of this:
One of you is lying."--Dorothy Parker

"The worst thing you can do to a man is to tell him he can have what he wants." --Sam Clemens

"Education is always painful; Pain is always educational."--Boris

"For I dipp'd into the Future,
Far as mortal eye could see;
Saw the Vision of the World
And all the wonder that would be.
Saw the Heavens fill with commerce;
Argosies of magic sails--
Pilots of the purple twilight
Dropping down with costly bales."
--Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Locksley Hall

"All things by immortal power,
Near or far
Hiddenly to each other linkéd are--
That thou cans't not touch a flower
Without troubling a star."

"The Earth is the Cradle of the Mind...but one cannot stay forever in a cradle."--Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky

"The quest of the Inner Ring will break your hearts unless you break it. But if you break it, a surprising result will follow. If in your working hours you make the work your end, you will presently find yourself all unawares inside the only circle in your profession that really matters. You will be one of the sound craftsmen, and other sound craftsmen will know it.

This group of craftsmen will by no means coincide with the Inner Ring or the Important People or the People in the Know.

It will not shape that professional policy or work up that professional influence which fights for the profession as a whole against the public: nor will it lead to those periodic scandals and crises which the Inner Ring produces. But it will do those things which that profession exists to do and will in the long run be responsible for all the respect which that profession in fact enjoys and which the speeches and advertisements cannot maintain."
C.S. LEWIS
Oration at University of London, 1944
THE INNER RING

"Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing."--Werner vonBraun

"The heights by great men reached and kept,
Were not attained by sudden flight.
But they, while their companions slept,
Were toiling upward through the night."--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"A mathematician is a machine for converting caffeine into theorems."--Paul Erdös

"Here there is dawning
A bright new day.
THINK! Woulds't thou have
It slip useless away?"--I don't recall the author.

"There are two sorts of people: those who understand what they don't manage, and those who manage what they don't understand."---?

"Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain."--Freiderich von Schiller, The Maid Of Orleans

That's all for now.

QUOTES By FREEPERS...

Who cares what you don't like. You are a jerk, a cad, a weasel. Your life is a monument to stupidity. You are a stench, a revulsion, a big suck on a sour lemon. You are a bleating foal, a curdled staggering mutant dwarf smeared richly with the effluvia and offal accompanying your alleged birth into this world. An insensate, blinking calf, meaningful to nobody, abandoned by the puke-drooling, giggling beasts who sired you and then killed themselves in recognition of what they had done.

Do not annoy the goverment, and never let them notice you. For as it was in Imperial Japan, any "nail" that sticks out will be hammered back down again. America is long gone. We live in a different land with the same name.

Unknown Freeper

America has become a nation of sheep, tended by wolves. As long as the wolves only take one sheep at a time, the herd remains content. As long as the herd has their TV and government cheese, it will not care if the wolves take a sheep every now and then. By the time the herd realizes the danger, it will already be at the slaughterhouse.

Quotes By Others

"If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator." -George W. Bush ---------

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.
The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
-- C.S. Lewis

"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible to live without breaking laws."
B-- Ayn Rand, (“Atlas Shrugged”)

"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force."
-- Ayn Rand (“The Nature of Government”)

"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."
-- William Pitt, 1783

Same a bit longer

Political tags -- such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth -- are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort.
Robert A. Heinlein
