Please, let it be true!!!!! The income tax is choking us with paperwork, convoluted thinking, and just plain expense. I would be delighted to see a move toward taxing consumption, rather than income. This also strikes me as potentially favorable to retired people, whose earning opportunities are limited and whose consumption is typically lower.

There is no question that the IRS system must stop, but so far, the government refuses to even answer basic questions about the code! I heard about this after the tax cut was passed, that President Bush's centerpiece of his 2004 campaign would be some sort of monumental changing of the tax system. Either a flat tax or a national retail sales tax. Count that for what it's worth.
