Many thanks for your responses, especially I_dmc, for citing Article XXII, Section 1 of the Constitution, which appears to be provide secure insulation against Slick ever again running for the presidency -- presuming Article XXII, Section 2 was ratified by three-quarters of the state legislatures within 7 years of the proposed amendment. I had thought the restriction to two terms applied only to two successive terms. Keybored makes a good point in the sense that the Democrats, with the invaluable aid of the media, managed to de-elect Nixon just two years after he had won what is still the largest majority ever run up in a presidential election. I was also intrigued by the OKSooner suggestion of a proxy president Slick, but I assume that if anything happened to president Hill, VP Bill would be barred by Article XXII, Section 1 from succeeding her in the event that she were to die in office -- and maybe this is insulation against his ever being nominated for VP. I agree with laredo44 but admit I sided with that 60% of the Republican rank-and-file who still opposed his resignation on the day he resigned if only because Nixon was being made to take the fall for sins that did not differ, materially, from those committed by all of the Cold War presidents who had preceded him -- when Hoover did 'black bag' jobs on a daily basis for all of them, and even agreed to LBJ's request to bug Nixon's 1968 election plane. Finally, to willyone, I can only say that Slick Willy is certainly not a hero of mine, although Nixon surely is and always has been, as anyone who has been contributing to this forum since 1998 knows all too well. As for being a moron, I would remind you of what GOP Senator Roman Hruska said in defense of Judge Carswell as a nominee to the Supreme Court. After admitting that Carswell was a mediocre nominee, Hruska defended his nomination by saying that, in a democracy, "the mediocre are entitled to a little representation aren't they, and a little chance." Give us morons a break, eh.

Well, we all know that Bill is bent on giving the Bushes hell. He's shameless, and we've come to expect that from him. Just look at his recent jaunt across Europe, where he skewered Bush before a delighted throng of British Labor Party ministers. Hillary's situation is different, though. As a sitting Senator, she is slightly more bound to discretion. Any tongue lashings she administers will likely be behind closed doors, hidden from the public and the press.
