Yes, the state has grown more conservative. They had a conservative Republican Senator for 6 years during the 1990s and a Republican governor as well. When Jesse Ventura was elected in 1998, the DFL candidate, Skip Humphrey(son of HHH) ran THIRD, behind the Republican. This would have been inconceivable when Mondale was first elected in 1964 and the DFL was in its heyday. Wellstone won his first race narrowly because the incumbent Republican senator Rudy Boschwitz was not all that good a candidate and did not take him seriously. The Republicans have a very good shot at defeating Mondale.
