It's 10:00 here; AZ never changes. Guess you could just call it Zonie time. I am always so totally confused because I have family on the east and west coasts and my dad and step-mom are central. When the clocks change I am lost... 2 hours, 3 hours? Right now we are Pacific time.

IRC = Internet Relay Chat. You've heard of those infamous "chat rooms" you can find on the internet? Most are quite disgusting, but a few can be interesting.

Advantage of a chat room is that several people can gather in one place and make comments in real time, though one line at a time... sort of like an internet "party line."

Chat can be fun, but what's on the net is pretty bad, so I wrote my own chat server a couple of years ago - password protected to keep the riff-raff out.

My kids do the Instant Messaging thing with their friends. Is it similar?

Yes, except several people can participate in chat at one time. As I understand instant messaging, that's only between pairs of people.
