I also heard that documents found indicate they would target shopping centers. And, they hate us for taking their oil so who is buying gas in that area today?? Nobody I would imagine if they don't have to!
To: aristeides
Oh indeed it did happen . It was 1 of the top chess games played in the history of warfare in my opinion. If I recall properly the opposition sniper was shot thru his own scope .
To: dorben
I think these guys are indeed team members in a bigger picture. Note the timing coincidental with the congressional vote on war with Iraq.
To: aristeides
Yes .. It / they could be defined as a team , though I suspect the shootings would have continued on FRgardless of the congresscritters vote .
Anything I say about this is pure suspicion but I've read some good stuff on the thread ! Perhaps we will find that in the end these people just simply have a deep dark crevice in their core , that will never be filled .
My granddaughter refers to people like this as " Life haters " . I do believe it will take a sniper to nail these people or an incredible degree of pure luck .

I agree with your scenario. Shooters are waiting for a white van to pass and then take their shot. This is consistent with the probability that it is a terrorist operation. Also, it should be observed that the targets are almost purposefully diverse, heightening the terror value.
To: wharfrat
Definite Terrorist Team-Weapons not openly transported- Weapons kept and fired from possible fixed platform in vans-Trained observers-Operationally Sound Military Style Shootings!Well planned recon missions-Precision Operations! Too many coincidences-smooth flowing tactical precision! Heck, could be. You may be on to something with your analysis.

Wouldn't it be great if some 50 year old woman sees a guy in a white van, pulling out a rife, pulls out her own little 38 snub nose and blows the guy aways and they find out it is the so called sniper. I can dream, can't I ?
To: ladyinred
you might wanna go back and read my reply again. what I said was that "normally" terrorists will claim responsibility. Point is, honestly, I really don't know whose doing this. Nobody does. Most have opinions, and I think it could be terrorists, but it could be a deranged duo. I think if it were terrorists, it'd be happening in more than one place, not just one spot. Fact of the matter is, no one outside certain informed personnel, will know who is really doing this until they're caught.

Someone has mentioned that the van could be a decoy, but I'd like to elaborate on that and suggest the white van as an unwitting decoy. I've proposed both of these scenarios as possibilities (1. Decoy White/or other color vans, or box trucks (2. Unwitting White vans used as existing camouflage or as you say, 'the green light to shoot).
Another possible scenario is a combination of the two... What if the shooting blind is now a black vehicle providing an enclosed space. They wait for a white vehicle of some kind to appear (with ladder racks or whatever) They shoot. The sniper leaves separately from the van on a bike with the broken-down weapon. Only way to detect this is to smell the inside of each van or truck in the 30 mile area.

This would require safe houses (in Montgomery County, Spotsylvania, and Manassas, that the bike rider could ride to and hole up (or possibly three or four separate cells including Bowie)

I dont care who the sniper is, he is a terrorist, and just like the media, he is trying to replace the dollar with a fake money or turn the dollar into useless crap, destroying a legit economy and way of life.
Enough said. HAng the media as we hanged the fake money makers in the mafya. Why is it so hard to see there is a limit to freedom of expression.

Ive seen too much speculation that if hes a nut, hes not highly trained and if hes highly trained, hes not a nut.
The two are not mutually exclusive.
To: LSUfan
I think you make a good case for this being an al Qaeda operation.
I saw a documentary on Islamic militant groups showing them training with firearms right here in America.
Why is the media mum to this notion?
To: LSUfan
Unconvincing. I won't say that it
couldn't be salamikazis, but you don't really make a good case for it
being them, either.
First off, there's only been one school shooting, which doesn't really translate into "targeting schools."
Second, you've made too big a deal about "moving targets." But the shootings have predominantly targeted people who were not moving much -- such as people at gas stations, or sitting on benches, or the woman who was standing at the back of her minivan. The one school shooting is odd not just because it was the only school shooting, but also for the reason that the kid was moving.
Third, you've made too much of the timing w/respect to the tanker attack. First off, the shootings started first. Second, they involved a non-American target. Third, they happened 10,000 miles away -- it's better viewed as a coincidence.
Fourth, the ballistics guys have traced 8 of the shootings to the same gun, meaning the same person/people are probably involved in all cases. One would expect a few more terrorists to be out there shooting, and different weapons to be involved.
Finally, there are instances of serial killer "teams", including a young guy and his girlfriend who in the '50s killed several people from long distance, using a rifle.

10 shots, 10 kills? Actually it's 10 shots, 8 kills or 11 shots 9 kills, if today's is connected. How do we know he's only fired 10 or 11 times? Answer: We don't. We just assume it, probably because it makes him seem scarier.
In reality, the shooter could have missed 10 or 20 times, too, and everybody who heard it chalked up the sound to a backfire or something else.
All we really know for sure is that he fired these particular shots that happened to hit people. He could be a pretty average shot, and I bet we'll never, ever know about his misses.
Food for thought.

If this escalates to other cities, we will have to defend ourselves. Those who have provided themselves with weapons already and learned how to use them, and [this is important] have developed various skills such as those used in hunting will be checking out the surroundings at all times. For example, when pumping gas into the SUV, scan for line-of-sight for potential rifle shots from woods. This involves looking farther than 50 feet, which is about as far as most people look.
