Ditto Thailand. Great food, beaches, accomodations on the sand for $20 per night. I love it!

A drive up the coast from LA to Portland would be pretty cool. This is the time of year to do it too.

Now you've done it! I almost forgot the Keukenhof, Holland (sp?), acres and acres of tulips in the spring with a windmill on the premises. Not to forget the canals of Amsterdam, the bratwursts in Germany, pomme frites and mayo, zigeunerschnitzels, castles, friendly people (even in France). The cabarets of Berlin, Windsor Castle, the Tower of London, Linderhof, the Austrian Alps, Switzerland, I'm driving myself crazy.

After reading just your topic line, I was going to suggest Costa Rica. After reading your post, I see that you are already considering it for all the reason I would have mentioned.

Shoot, in Costa Rica you could probably BUY a house for the cost of a 4 month vacation in Europe. :- )

...and that's not really a joke.

I always thought of Thailand as more of a place for grownups. Would my son enjoy it there?

1. The Southwest United States, Alaska, or Pacific Northwest
2. Australia & New Zealand
3. Canada (British Columbia)
4. Iceland
5. The Netherlands

My suggestion is New Zealand. Let me know what it's like.

I have heard that I can afford a vacation home there. Thats one reason I like it. I also like the idea of good food and being on the beach. Have you been there? I have a list of places there where there are lots of americans living there. I think that would make it more enjoyable for my son.

My vote goes for Australia. I was in Sydney for about a week, and definately want to go back and see more. Going to the zoo and taking the VIP tour, inexpensive by American standards, was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. There is just so much to see and do in AU, and I understand great surf. Also, you can take a short plane trip over to NZ and do the backpacker thing cheaply, and/or hop up to Tonga. One plus of AU and NZ is that the dollar goes far. Also, the food is great, esp. the steak and seafood.

I would love to see Israel since I am a born again christian. I am afraid it might be cost prohibitive though.

There are great beaches in the Bahamas. Nothing quite like a Caribbean vacation.

<< winodog, my wife and I have spent various time lengths in Australia, once for nearly a year.

The natives speak English and unlike Americans folks there can actually DRIVE! The sun ALWAYS shines and our dollar is worth about 1.85 to theirs, always a nice thing when on vacation.

Aussies LOVE Americans. ['Cept for 1 in 100 "DemocRAT"-like morons]

There are multitudes of things to do and see, from old historic prisons in Tasmania to the Great Barrier Reef in the north of Queensland.

The food is wonderful, fruit is inexpensive and always available. Your son will be agog over the surf and if you are there in "footie" season, nothing, 'cept the agility and athleticism of an Australian Rules Football game beats the wild atmosphere of a rugby match!

Negatives? [Very few!] Sharks, stingers. >>

Me too, months and years.

Aussie rocks and neither of you will want to come home.

Also swing by New Zealand while you are there.

Magnificently Beautiful!

Thanks! Where would you suggest we stay and do you know how to go about renting a guest house for the summer.Since it is summer here and winter there, I am sure we will want to stay somewhere that is warm enough to swim year round. I love the idea of all the seafood and catching my own dinner. Plus we would have a blast snorkling the great barrier reef.
I have some errands to do. I will check in later.

They're desperate for brick layers in Kabul but I would prefer Switzerland.

Depending on when you are going, they are going to need brick layers and constuction workers in Baghdad in a few months but there's no surf there.

Thanks to the good Lord this will not be a working vacation. I do not mind helping a church or some other or. that does good work, but mainly I want to relax and give my son fond memories that will stay with him for the rest of his life.
My father is a great man however he worked all his life, mom too. I want my son to look back when he is 30 and say wow, I did not realize it at the time but my dad really loved me and cared for me. He could have just paid my mom support and had the best time of his life when he was in his 40's, but he cared enough to live his life for me and maybe he will grow up to be the kind of man that does the same for his children.

Ireland is a fabulous place, even if you are not Irish. The people are the most friendly that you will find anywhere in the world. And it is very affordable as well, once you get 10 minutes outside of Dublin.

I also spent some time in Chile earlier this year. Again, very friendly people and pretty affordable as well. And you can get by in most places with either English, Spanish or German.

I am not afraid of much, but I would be afraid to travel in most places in Central (Mexico, Panama, etc) and northern South America (Columbia!) because of the kidnapping problem that is a way of life there these days. Many Americans in those countries hire bodyguards. If you don't hire bodyguards, your family in the states might get a note saying "Deposit $10,000" in this bank account or never see your husband again. It is really pathetic, but goes on all the time.
