McDermott is a major embarrassment to the majority of Washingtonians. He represents a district up in the Puget Sound area near Seattle. Very liberal. A head shrink by profession.

Harkin said he takes ultimate responsibility for the incident. "I apologize to my fellow Iowans for allowing this to happen," he said.

Yep, then why're those other two clymers falling on the sword?

I have the article right here: it was $200,000 worth of Conoco stock.
(Des Moines Register, 6-28-01 p. A1)

Thanks for the documentation (of my faulty recall of $500K number)!

"Harkin comes back to Iowa during campaigns and touts his Iowan roots. However, the truth is that he and his lobbyist wife live in a mansion in the Bahamas."

Fair criticism of Harkin, but in the interests of truth, his "mansion" in the Bahamas is a nice beach house, no mansion, albeit on very prime real estate.

Looking further into Mrs. Harkins business you will find that she was involved in securing
a huge loan for failing Enron that was backed by the feds.

LOL! Like I try to tell impressionable youth...follow the money and you'll usually find
a Democrat/Liberal/Socialist holding a bag of it!

Sidebar: love your screen-name. Got to walk the deck of the good ship Constitution in
Boston harbor a few years ago, as well as The Freedom Trail while in Boston on bidness.

Well, I said it first (see #29) but in the Harkin-Ganske debate, the generalissimo of this second-rate watergate knock-off did indeed demand that the public drop it -- and, "move on."

d.o.l.

The thing is, if they want to get to the bottom of the "heap", somebody has to investigate Jeff Link.

That means:

going back to Pennsylvania (aide to House Speaker Robert W. O'Donnell - 1992), Clinton campaign in Pennsylvania, 1992, O'Donnell for Governor (abandoned primary, 1993), (Lt. Gov. Mark) Singel for Governor (1994) against Tom Ridge. Find people who worked with the guy in the Pennsylvania days. Maybe he just wasn't the most honest guy in the bunch (misrepresenting, not giving the facts straight, cheating people of money / making promises he had no intention of keeping, "only out for himself", etc.)

Inevitably, the casual lying catches up with him.

The real insult to the Iowa voters is that a story is concocted about how this "junior staffer" (age: 21) had this middle-age attorney (age: 53) change his registration, contribute money, and then act as a mole in the opposing campaign. That was pretty routine Pennsylvania politics to try and stick your people in the other person's campaign.

Philly is the place where one state senator "won" an election in the early 1990's by going around house to house and getting people to sign "absentee ballot applications" that were really votes for himself (Stinson vs. Marks) The federal judge declared Marks the winner---just by invalidating the votes that put Stinson over the top.

Face it, Harkin: This guy picks up a lot of the East Coast/Pennsylvania "bad habits", and a lot of Clinton dissembling, in his journeyman days (early 1990's). Then he comes back to his "roots" and inevitably starts screwing up your campaign . . .

No one asks: wouldn't this eager 21-year-old have let his little scheme be known at least to others in the campaign? Sure. They knew what was going on. But when finally "dimed" on it, did they level with the Iowa people? No. They tried more B.S. and lies---just like they do on the East Coast (see: Torricelli in NJ).

What if Harkin loses partly because of this, and the Senate goes Republican? Wooo hooo!
