The MTC has been doing nothing but badger those of us who are gainfully employed to get out of our cars and into public transportation to get to work. If you're not carpooling, you're pond scum. Spare the Air. Ride a bicycle if you have to. Now, apparently, cars are a good thing . . . but only if you're on welfare. If you ask me, it's tar and feather time.

It was tar-and-feather time in the 60's when Johnson announced his Governemt sponsored "Great Slum Society.

What makes you think the Kalifornia sheeple will start heating the tar over this?

Getting children to and from school seems to be the main transportation need here. Home schooling would solve this problem.

"The mother of four from Livermore bought her 1999 Ford Aerostar van with $3,000 she earned working on the 2000 U.S. Census."

A 1999 van for $3,000? Those Fords sure depreciate quickly!

When I was in school grammer through High School I TOOK THE BUS! My parents could not afford a car for me. Perhaps if this woman got a job, she could purchase a car like 99% of America.

That was just the down payment, somehow she persuaded someone to lend her the rest of the money. Any bets on interest rate? How about chances of default?

In the liberal mind, making the down payment is the full equivalent of buying the car. Now it is hers and if she can't keep up the payments it will be a big, nasty, greedy bank that will want to take it away from her.

yeah, I walked to and from school. It would take me 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how cold it was outside.

And no, it wasn't 10 miles, uphill, in the snow.

As Judge Smale would put it, "You'll get nothing and like it."

Let's face it. One simply can't function in todays world without a cell phone, computer, large screen hdtv, micro wave ovens, costco membership, etc. If we are serious about helping people mainstream, we must make these part of the program as well as a car.

I did not have a car to take me to school. MY PARENTS MADE ME RIDE THE BUS! We were too pay for a car for me to go to school. I went to a state college and still could not afford a car. I PAID EACH AND EVERY LOAN BACK I TOOK OUT!

Five years after I left college was WORKING (I took the bus to work for five years) I bought an old used Fiesta.
DO NOT FEEL SORRY FOR ME I EARNED THAT CAR AND WAS DAMN proud of it! Today, my wife and I have a Mercedes Benz SUV which paid for from the money we earned from WORKING! My father has since passed away. MY PARENTS NEVER GAVE ME A PENNY FOR COLLEGE. I EARNED IT, as DID MY WIFE! My father's dream was to own a new Mercedes Benz some DAY. THROUGH My hard work and my wife's hard work we made his dream come true! NO ONE EVER GAVE US A PENNY, NOT EVEN A FREE BUS TOKEN! LET THIS WOMAN LEARN WHAT IT TAKES TO OWN A CAR! IF she doesn't want to put forth the effort than she doesn't deserve to have a CAR!

WHO WILL PAY THIS womans's INSURANCE? for car repairs, gas, parking etc? NOT ME! WILL SHE FEEL DEPRIVED IF SHE CAN'T HAVE A NEW BMW and scream racism too?

GET OFF YOUR BUT, GET a JOB. Instead of watching OPRAH take a college class. LEARN A TRADE. GET SOME PRIDE! AND EARN A CAR!

Donna Currier of Oakland said she has a hard time getting her two kids and herself to school each day on public transit. She said Alameda County gives her a bus pass only for herself, and not for her two children, who advocates said should be eligible for bus passes.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm .. The school doesn't offer Bus Service??

LOL. I would never buy a car on credit. Paying cash keeps me from spending a ridiculous amount on a car that will be worth nothing in too short a time . . .

Alameda County has school bus service. Even here in rural Montana we have bus service. If she thinks her kids are too cool to take a bus let them walk.

When my daughter (who is 3) goes to school she will first walk to elementary school which is about 3/4 of a mile away. When she goes to Middle School and High School she can either walk, take the bus, or ride a bike.

My wife and I will NOT PAY for a car for her. She will need to understand what it takes to EARN A CAR!

I don't know who this Judge Smale is, but he sounds like he could have been my grandpa.

TO ALL: I appreciate that we all need a little help now and again, but enough is enough. Several years back, a Section 8 apartment complex was built just down the street from us. Guess what? There are more late-model, high-dollar vehicles driving in and out of there than you can shake a booklet of foodstamps at. I work for a living and drive a 1984 BMW 318I. Maybe I ought to quit my job so I can start driving a 2-year old 7 series.

i have an aunt who has lived on and off government assistance for years... i don't know how many cars she has bought in herlife time... somehow, something always happens to the cars... her kids take them, use them, abuse them, sell them (along w/her household appliances and furniture)... no good boyfriends take over the cars... i can see that happening in many of these welfare cases... often, unless you earn something yourself, you don't appeciate the value of something...

Yes, you might sadly be right.

Perhaps if these people decided to earn an income they might feel differently about being TAXED to death.

Yes, there are some handi-capped people who need help. There are people with chronic illnesses like cancer, Crohn's disease, ALS, Heart Disease, AIDS etc who need help, but the majority of the people need to learn what it takes to put in an 8 hour day!

You know .. My father died of cancer when I was young and left my mother with 7 children to raise by herself and NOT ONCE did we ever have to go on welfare

If we didn't have the money .. we did without it .. plain and simple

Exactly;

When you take pride in yourself. When you take pride in what you do, you begin to take ownership of your life.

Once you start to take pride in yourself you begin to feel a sense of self worth. This self worth leads to takeing ownership of your life. Instead of letting everything control your life -- you control your life.

I grew up in a VERY poor home We lived in a one bedroom apartment - I slept in the living room. Both of my parents worked to the day they died. They never even gave me a penny for College. When I was in Highschool I worked and helped my parents out financially. I paid my own way through college, and paid every damn student loan I had back!

It took me five years of hard work to afford a used car - paying back all of my student loans at the time. My parents dream was to one day own a new Mercdes - Benz. They never even owned a new car. When my wife and I drove out of the Mercedes Benz dealership I was crying. I knew my father in Heaven was right beside me with a big smile. I earned that car. ANYONE CAN earn such a car with hard work.

Thank you for your post.
