The foreign minister said that France and Britain had shared information on the proof of such a weapons program. and it "is out of the question to divulge these exchanges."

What did France know and when did they know it? And why are they afraid of the rest of the world being given this evidence?

Because the French have historically been one of Iraq's biggest trading partners. Were I in Blair's shoes, I would use this information as a boot on Chirac's neck to get him to behave.

France knows a lot--and have been feeding it to Iraq as part of their pre-surrender planning.

That would be because France knows that the damning information in this report will lead to a war. Kind of strange really - the reason the information is being made public is precisely because France refuses to believe it.

And why are they afraid of the rest of the world being given this evidence?

Because...

  1. Releasing it would show how stupid, cowardly, and unjustified is their resistance to American action against Iraq?
  2. Keeping it secret would tacitly allow us to go ahead unilaterally while permitting them to bash us for it?
  3. Keeping it secret also lets them maintain their cushy relationships with Arab nations that include selling arms that we then have to deal with?

Our friends the French.

More of the "we need more evidence lie".

We didn't need this much evidence when we saved France in two World Wars and protected them from the Iron Curtain.

Maybe if a mustard gas bomb, like the ones Saddam used on his own people, killed some frogs in Paris; they might have enough evidence then.

Give the "world community" the middle finger and start killing dictators.

Because thay are sucking up to the bully. It is better for them to know the US is the target than to get Hussein out at the risk of their country becoming a terrorist target too. Part of the cheese eating surrender monkey Gallic approach to threats.

I think it's clear that France has had a hand in whatever Iraq has been doing since the Gulf War, and they're worried as hell that some of it might come out in any report. They simply can't be trusted. When we go to war, no representative from France should have any part in the planning - there's just too much risk in something being told that shouldn't be told.

Wonderful thing about a free press, we can publish such details. Meanwhile the French are busy with books on tinfoil theories that no plane crashed into the Pentagon.

kattracks,

You asked:

"What did France know and when did they know it? And why are they afraid of the rest of the world being given this evidence?"

Because the French helped Iraq develop its nukes, biological weapons and chemical weapons.

This calls for serenity and seriousness..." - Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin

No doubt there is something there they don't want decent people (i.e. anybody but politicians) to see, such as French complicity in Iraq nuclear weapons programs. After all, the French were building the reactor the Israelis destroyed in 1981. Who says they aren't neck deep in Saddam's current programs?

You might want to let the French tourist bureau know how you feel. You can find them at:

Contact the French Tourist Board

I sent them this email:

Due to the anti-American positions of the French govenment, I will never again travel to France or spend a penny on a French product. In addition, I am going to be part of a campaign to boycott your cowardly little country.

UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in 1998 in the face of an imminent US and British missile attack on Baghdad, and have since been barred from returning despite insistent UN demands.

Where did this come from?

Exactly. Methinks that France would:
#1 be implicated as an enabler in this development and be highly embarassed by the information, and
#2 be forced to acknowledge the very real threat that exists and therefore have to change positions and support the 'regime change' efforts in Iraq.

I can't think of any other viable reasons to supress such information, unless {sarcasm} France has vital intel assets in place and is trying to protect them - {/sarcasm}

If all the documents come out, France could join Iran, Iraq, and North Korea on the Axis of Evil. The Surrender Monkees are the most useless set of allies any Nation Ever Had
