Cardinal Egan may have made a mistake in the past over one of those sex-scandal cases, by trusting too much to the professional psychologists, but he is a good man. He is NOT another Cardinal Law.
I got to know him pretty well when he was Bishop of Bridgeport. His columns in the diocesan newspaper were faithful and true to the Church's teaching, including right-to-life issues. He went to Washington more than once for the annual right-to-life march, in the days when very few priests or bishops showed up. And he was named to his present post because the Pope judged him to be a good shepherd and faithful Catholic, worthy to follow Cardinal O'Connell.

Egan's a solid conservative, so I've read. Good stand that he's taking.

I am glad to hear from someone who is familiar with Cardinal Egan. He had a difficult mission to take the reigns of the most beloved John Cardinal O'Connor.
I wish him well. He has remained faithful to the life issue and now is spearheading the voucher issue.

I have problems with him too, and I agree with his conclusions here, but to raise the "have/have not" argument begs the merits of the issue. Also, the way he casts it is a bit specious since he accuses the state of denying the educational opportunities to poor kids, when it is specificially the Catholic School system that is denying the opportunity since they are the ones denying entry without the moolah. Also, you got to wonder if privitation and vouchers are best utilized in the direction of an instution that has NOW become synomous with sanctimonious CHILD ABUSE.

Catholic schools don't have the benefit of receiving local, state, and federal funding. What do you want them to do.
BTW, why don't you just come right out and make a molestor joke? Why be coy about it like you're being here?

BTW, my friend, do you realize that the majority of Catholic school teachers are laity? Oh yeah, that's right, it would take the oomph out of your veiled insults to the Church. SIlly me.
To: Cicero
I wish I could agree with you. But I believe he has a history of strong arming many of those with legitmate gripes concerning abuse by priests. That does not square with being a good man. Further, he wrote the current archdiocesan guidelines for the formation of Catholics in regard to the catechism. It is progressive to the point of including sex ed and discussion of masterbation for seventh and eight graders, which is in opposition to the Propogation of the Faith's letter to families urging that they and they alone teach these matters to their children, whether or not the diocesan catechetical outline says it should be taught or not. Egan says it should be taught. V's wife.

The problem with the rampant child molestation throught the USA Catholic Church and empowered by the leadership and currently hunkered down in a bunker "defensive" mentality is that it is not a joke. After all without repentance there is no remission of sin.

Here is an article illustrating Cardinal O'Connors feelings regarding Clinton.
Cardinal's Dying Wish: Keep Clinton Out of St. Patrick's
NewsMax.com Monday, May 8, 2000
As Cardinal O'Connor battled brain cancer and faced death during the past eight months, he remained steadfast in his distaste of Bill Clinton.
A source close to the Cardinal tells NewsMax.com that O'Connor had a long-standing order to keep Bill Clinton out of St. Patrick's Cathedral no matter how important the occasion.
Last week the White House announced that both Bill and Hillary Clinton would be attending the Cardinal's funeral mass at St. Patrick's, set for Monday afternoon.
"O'Connor would have gone berserk if he knew Clinton was coming," the source said.
O'Connor was said to be extremely hostile to Clinton, a man who annoyed him on several levels. O'Connor had been a veteran, a Navy Admiral who had served in the military and in the front lines of Vietnam.
Clinton's draft avoidance record didn't sit well with the Cardinal, nor did Clinton's corruption.
O'Connor was also annoyed with Clinton's strong advocacy of partial birth abortion a procedure O'Connor likened to infanticide.
O'Connor's animus toward the president erupted after the crash of TWA Flight 800 in 1996.
In the days after the tragedy, Mayor Giuliani had organized a memorial service for the victims' families at JFK Airport.
Cardinal O'Connor was set to officiate, until he found out Clinton planned on attending. "If Clinton is coming, you can count me out," O'Connor's office bluntly told the mayor's office.
Clinton was quickly disinvited.
A month or so after the crash, O'Connor hosted his own memorial mass at St. Patrick's for the victims. Clinton was in New York that weekend for a birthday party and the White House called the Archdiocese and asked if he could attend.
The answer from the Cardinal's Office was blunt: Bill Clinton is not welcome at St. Patrick's.

I am now coming to the conclusion that any Bishop or Cardinal who allows sex education in his diocese to be mandated, who also permits a catechism which avoids heavy emphasis on the Virtues and original sin and our fallen nature, is not about the business of the formation of true Catholics, but is hastening the collapse of true Catholicism. Harsh, yes, I suppose so. V's wife.

I just think that anyone trying to make some connection between being pro-vouchers and looking to import fresh meat is just taking potshots. Child molestation (more like teenager seduction and initiation by homosexuals) does not have to pop up on every thread about Catholics does it?
