It, like the Ten Commandments, worked to end blood fueds. An eye for an eye, though seemingly harsh to us, was a major improvement. It might actually be an improvement over what we have now.
I particularly like the false accusation punishment.

All I know is when I was standing next to this code in The Louvre, I couldn’t believe it. Most impressive thing I’ve ever seen in a museum, and people were walking by it as though it were no big deal.

If a man violate the wife (betrothed or child-wife) of another man, who has never known a man, and still lives in her father's house, and sleep with her and be surprised, this man shall be put to death, but the wife is blameless. Wow, the Muslims still haven't caught up with the 18th Century - BC.
