OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PR99:161 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 8, 1999 GOVERNOR DAVIS ANNOUNCES STATE ENERGY LOANS TO DAIRY FARMS SACRAMENTOGovernor Gray Davis today announced that the State is extending low-interest loans to dairy farmers in Glenn, Stanislaus, Kings, Merced, Madera, Fresno and San Bernardino Counties as part of his commitment to keep California agriculture on the cutting edge of energy technology. Eight dairy operations will use the loans that range from $7,500 to $39,500 to purchase energy-efficient, adjustable speed drive vacuum pumping systems that can reduce the amount of electricity used in milking by 30 percent. Nearly a quarter of all the energy used at dairies goes to milking cows. The loans are made through the California Energy Commission's Energy in Agriculture Program which funds demonstration projects employing new, commercially available technology. Once the technology is installed, the Commission monitors and evaluates the demonstration project. Energy and cost benefits are then shared with other growers through field days and workshops held by the Commission. Six of the larger dairies will also install adjustable speed drives on the pumps that move milk to the cooling units. A fifth of a dairy's energy use is typically used to cool the milk, and these improvements should reduce energy consumption in this area by an estimated 20 percent. With substantial savings on energy bills, the dairies all should be able to repay their loans with a 3.3 percent annual interest rate before the seven-year deadline for repayment. The California Energy Commission will use the loan repayments to fund future projects. ###

So how much did the dairy industry contribute in order to become a "critical industry" in Kali, direly in need of capital infusion?
The sheeple don't get it yet. The big, and still growing, problem isn't corporate corruption, it's gov't/corporate cronyism, and special favors and/or protectionist measures and/or assistance in wiping out the competition for politically connected companies and industries. And the Dems (and corrupted Pubbies) are using the current political climit to increase gov't "oversight," providing ever more opportunities for gov't behavior to diferentially impact particular industries, industry leaders versus innovative competitors, and so on. We even have a "Star Chamber" at the federal level now, courtesy of Senator Sarbanes.
