Looks like we're just a few years away from "service guarentees citizenship" to me.

My fellow citizens get to spend a little more than half of everything I earn. In my mind, that is sacrifice enough.

I'll donate my time and energy as I see fit, thank you very much.

Isn't there a term for a government system that federalizes most or everything?

Don't worry, we all qualify already. I work half the year for the Government, so I'm covered. (A variation on my response to my boss during the annual United Way campaign: "If it ain't gettin' done with half of my salary already going to the Government, then the problem's not on my end.")

to·tal·i·tar·i·an Pronunciation Key (t-tl-târ-n) adj.

Of, relating to, being, or imposing a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life, the individual is subordinated to the state, and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed: "A totalitarian regime crushes all autonomous institutions in its drive to seize the human soul" (Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.).

I was thinking of the "F" word.

Of course, they are not mutually exclusive, are they?

How I spend my free time is my business and not W's. It's not the Gubmint's business. It's not anyone's business but mine. I don't need an excuse like, "I'm already paying half my wages in taxes" though that's true enough. I'm an American and how I spend my time is my own damned business.

This might be a prelude to compulsory service in the armed forces. It would seem to be a logical step in that direction if compulsory service was your goal.

We've replaced the "F" word with neoconservative. It sounds much less dangerous. We learned it from the dems who replaced the "M" word with progressive.

I wonder how long it will take to get a challenge to your statement.
I will not be the first. Nope. No way.

I am not familiar with the AmeriCorps program. What is it's stated intent, and what about it is deemed objectional?

"4,000 hours over the rest of your lifetime"

Yes, we should all do this.
I will devote my 4,000 hours to spying on my foxy neighbor, and if I see her in the shower with a terrorist I will certainly call the TIPS program.

It didn't stick for them as they are still clearly morons.

the Bush administration's plans to encourage citizens to serve society are unworthy of a free society and make a mockery of the truly voluntary, benevolent actions based on the rational self-interest of the benefactors

You know what bit of Peer Group Collective conditioning enrages me the most about the "United Way" campaign?

"It's not important how much you give, we just want 100% participation."
