I honestly don't understand the reluctance of some to understand the consequences of vouchers for Islamic "academies." The Saudis and others will continue to fund them, but government funding will make it that much easier for them to focus on their mission. And there is NO way they can constitutionally be prevented from receiving funds if other religious schools can do so.
What puzzles me is that conservatives see this so clearly with groups like Planned Parenthood - it's painfully obvious that if PP gets taxpayer funding for "non-abortion services" like birth control or women's checkups, that means PP has all the more of its own money to spend on pushing abortion.
I say this not to drag abortion into the argument, but to point out that there's one case, at least, where conservatives clearly realize how government subsidies get you more of what you subsidize. If we don't want Islamic academies to increase in number, size, and influence, it's essential that we not subsidize them. It's clear that these academies are jihadist training grounds and recruiting centers. Any perusal of post-9/11 interviews with students & staff at these schools will demonstrate that.
